No car model has the range that Porsche’s 911 has, but with each passing generation the cars get a little bigger and with a little more features. Today you can choose Porsche’s Innodrive for new 911s, a fantastic technology that acts as an advanced cruise control. This and many other innovations make the modern 911 the world’s best sports car, but also a wonderful car to actually drive. That said, not everyone is looking for cooled seats and Apple CarPlay.
For some, it is more worthwhile with a well-sized shift-light and a lap timer within reach, or why not a 3.8L naturally aspirated engine lifted from the 993 and sharpened with the help of Reinhold Schmirler RS Tuning, benched to 317hp. Connected to a G50 differential gearbox where the real luxury is a balsam wood gear knob. It is in this segment that we find cars like this. Based around an 87 model, this street legal race car is something truly unique. The wide ST bodywork hides genuine Singer rims, covered in Michelin rubber and the car itself is adorned with two elegant white stripes as a clear homage to the old 911R.
So are the rear lights. The exterior evokes a strong need to chase lap times and as soon as you open a door or hood you understand that this is a car that can back up its looks. Most of the exterior panels are replaced with fiberglass variants to keep the weight down. The inside of the door offers amenities such as a leather strap to open and close a’la 911ST as well as a nylon belt to pick up the windows….which are in plexiglass.
Once in place in the Recaro seats, covered in pepita, you are surrounded by a full cage, just to the right of the steering wheel is a lap timer with associated shift light. The radio and sound system have been replaced with a kill switch for the drive package and the ability to adjust the brake action. Apple CarPlay, PASM and PDLS+ are good examples of things you won’t find in this car. What you get instead is a well-honed, very orange classic 911. Built with one thing in focus, lap times. No InnoDrive either, unfortunately, but 964 RSR chassis all around and hole-drilled supports to keep the rear window in place. Applies to prioritizing right.
