The vehicle in detail

Produced between 1974 and 1989, the G-Body 911 is one of the most recognizable variants of the famed Porsche sports car and, without a doubt, one of the best to drive. Built between 1974 and 1989, the G-Body 911s came in numerous variants, with the most visceral version was the Super Carrera- or better known as SC- built between 1978 and 1983. Powered by a 3.0-liter Flat-6, the SC is regarded for its unfiltered driving experience, exceptional durability, and practicality. There is a reason that when you look for this generation 911, many of them have mileage deep into the 6-figures, they are exceptionally dependable and fun to drive as well.

This 1981 Porsche 911 SC Targa is finished in Black over Black and is a great example for enthusiasts who want to get behind the wheel of a classic 911 at a more reasonable price point. Sold new at Sun West Inc. of St. Petersburg, Florida, the car has spent time in Florida, Texas, Canada and most recently, California, where it has been since 2017. The classic “Impact-Bumper” 911 shape is on full display with this car, but when you approach the vehicle, you realize that it is by no means a show car. Although the car was originally black, the black finish is not original and was not applied to the highest standard, exhibiting some cracking, crazing, and marks around the car. The Targa roll hoop, typically finished in black anodized stainless steel, is wrapped with a textured carbon fiber look material, and the car has a few sizable dents. For a complete rundown of this 911 Targa’s condition, please refer to the inspection report below. Issimi’s comprehensive inspections offer an in-depth look at the car you want, without needing a 3rd-party pre-purchase inspection.

On the interior, black leather covers the seats, both front and rear, as well as the lower door cards. The interior layout of a 911 from this vintage is not all that different from the classic 911s of the 1960s and 1970s, which is something that they were critiqued for at the time but is now is applauded for its simplicity. Although the layout is simple, this car benefits from numerous convenience features like power windows, air conditioning and dealer-installed cruise control. Also, an upgraded Kenwood head unit has been installed, allowing radio and CD compatibility. Like on the exterior, there is some wear noted on the inside of this 911- namely a tear in the driver’s seat and dry leather. Once again, for a full view of what this car needs, please look at the Inspection Report.

Sitting behind the passengers is a 3.0-liter air cooled flat-6 that is rated from the factory at 172 horsepower and 189 lb-ft of torque. Records show some work completed by well-known Southern California engine builder Mirage International Inc. and a head rebuild by Moonlight Machine- all of which took place in 2017. This engine is connected to a “915” 5-speed manual transaxle, a gearbox known for retaining the classic 911 feel and tends to be an enthusiast choice when it comes to these G-Body 911s. The original tie rods have been swapped out for units from a 930 Turbo, and the catalytic converter has been replaced with a test pipe- meaning that in this configuration, the car cannot be registered in California.

This car is perfect for somebody who wants a 911 Targa that they can drive and enjoy while working on some projects here and there to take this car to the next level. In its desirable black/black color combination, with Fuchs wheels and solid running gear, this car is the perfect jumping-off point- or if looks don’t bother you- a perfect car to use every day without worrying about damaging a showpiece.
