The Porsche 911 Targa Soft Window is a highly desirable and sought-after collector’s item. The zip-out plastic rear window, where you now find a glass version, was together with the removable roof panel, the eye-catcher of this new Porsche model. This design was intended to meet the safety regulations required for the American market. Porsche introduced the ‘safety roll bar’ to offer an open-top model that would still comply with these standards.

During brainstorming sessions, the name ‘Targa Florio’ came up, the road race in Sicily in which Porsche had achieved major motorsport successes since the mid-1950s. During a meeting, sales manager Harald Wagner suggested calling the car simply ‘Targa’. And so it was decided. Porsche patented the Targa concept in August 1965, and from the autumn of 1966 (model year 1967), the Targa was offered alongside the coupé versions of the 911, 911S, and 912.

The vehicle in detail

Instead of the foldable plastic rear window, the Targa models were also available from late summer 1967 with a fixed, heated safety-glass rear window. Up to model year 1970, the ‘Soft Window’ rear window could still be ordered as an option. This option was rarely chosen, which makes this model highly desirable and rare today. Especially on the first long-wheelbase version of ’69, it was barely produced: only 144 units in total for the 1969 911 T. One of the very last ones, in other words!

This car was delivered new on 7 February 1969 at Porsche Mahag in Munich, making it an original German-delivered car. After 25 years on German roads, it was sold to a new owner in Colorado, a common practice in those days. In 2015, the car came into the hands of the current owner, a Porsche enthusiast from East Flanders, via a Dutch intermediary.

Until the end of 2022, the car was restored by specialists. They took ample time to restore everything authentically and to source the correct parts. The restoration was carried out very thoroughly: every single component was either restored or renewed, down to the odometers, a task that requires real craftsmanship. Not only the visible parts, but truly everything! Due to the extensive fitting and custom work, only the very best craftsmen were involved, and few metalworkers today possess the skills required. Every phase of the restoration was photographed (over 200 files) and every invoice was kept.

This Porsche 911 Targa Soft Window is not only an interesting investment but also a unique and extremely rare collector’s piece that will make any Porsche enthusiast’s heart beat faster.
