For Sale: 1981 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 (930) – Moss Green Metallic – Matching Numbers Engine
This Porsche 930 Turbo was first registered on 30 June 1981 in Germany and has been part of the Belgian car scene for many years. It is a European-spec model from the 1981 production year, featuring the 3.3-litre turbocharged flat-six with intercooler, rated at 300 hp and 412 Nm at 4,000 rpm – performance that made it the fastest production car of its time.
Restoration and history
Between 2012 and 2016 the car underwent a complete body-off restoration.
- In 2012–2013, the matching numbers engine and original 4-speed gearbox were rebuilt by Porsche Classic Center Gelderland (invoices for €41,500). The gearbox number is unfortunately no longer legible after the rebuild, so matching cannot be confirmed.
- From 2013–2016, a further €61,000 was invested in the body, paintwork and interior.
- In total, the documented investment exceeds €105,000.
Since completion of the work, the car has covered approximately 6,000 km. The restoration is now over ten years old, and while the car remains in good general condition, some points of attention should be expected before returning it to top presentation and driving level.
Exterior
Originally delivered in Meridian Grey, the car was refinished during restoration in Moss Green Metallic (code 20C) – a correct and rare Porsche colour for 1981. The metalwork, paint and detailing were executed to a high standard, with good alignment and finish. Today the paint remains attractive.
Interior
The cabin is trimmed in Beige leather with renewed black carpets and original sport seats. Much of the trim was preserved and restored where needed, keeping the car’s authenticity intact while improving overall presentation.
Mechanical condition
The rebuilt 3.3-litre turbocharged engine delivers strong performance, with the trademark “turbo kick” at around 4,000 rpm that defined the 930’s reputation. The gearbox was also rebuilt and shifts as intended. Mechanically the car is running and driving, but as with all 930 Turbos – and especially one with a restoration now more than a decade old – further work and investment should be expected to bring it to the highest standard.
Driving character
Known as the “Widowmaker”, the 930 Turbo is famous for its combination of explosive power delivery, short wheelbase and lack of electronic driver aids. Below 3,500 rpm the engine feels composed, but once the turbo spools above 3,800 rpm, the sudden surge of power defines the driving experience. This raw, analog nature is what makes the 930 one of the most iconic 911s ever built.
