The vehicle in detail

When the Porsche 911 Turbo Carrera was introduced in 1974 it represented something new from the German automaker: its first true production supercar. Although it was immediately identifiable as a 911, the 930-coded car, as it was internally designated, featured a 3.0-litre flat-six engine boasting a single KKK turbocharger with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection. Weighing around a mere 1,200 kilograms, the 930 could sprint to 100 km/h in just over five seconds on its way to a 240 km/h top speed.

The 911 Turbo Coupé was equipped as standard with a long list of equipment that bolstered comfort and convenience, including air conditioning, full leather seats, rear wiper, headlight washers, and a stereo. Further options, including a power sunroof, were also available. In 1978, Porsche updated the model with a larger 3.3-litre engine with a power output of 253 horsepower (for the US market), an air-to-air intercooler, revised suspension, and new brakes.

The American market was highly important for Porsche, yet as US emissions were tightened once again in 1980, the model’s State-side availability ended around the same time, yet the Turbo continued with great appeal and sales success in the higher performance European specification. These examples, including the 1983 model year example offered here, are now among the most coveted iterations of any Porsche.

This Euro-spec 930 is cloaked in the unusual Porsche-specific Sonderfarben, or special colour, of Rauchequarz Metallic over brown leather trim. The odometer reads 76,967 kilometres at the time of cataloguing, and this example is an unusual non-sunroof-specified Turbo, making this a uniquely appointed and rarer unit with a stiffer chassis.

Well-preserved, and interestingly appointed, this Euro-spec 911 offers its next owner an excellent opportunity to experience the thrills of air-cooled Porsche ownership.
