The ultimate evolution of the 930 Turbo!

3 owners from new. Coming from Australia’s best Porsche collection. South African spec car; never been on UK soil. Matching numbers, books from new and immaculate.

The FIA’s 1976 tweak to the World Manufacturers Sports Car Championship, threw in the usual chaos and Ferrari dummy-spit, that such tweaks bring forth, however, as per any chaotic period, from the messiness comes some clear winners and losers: with the losers being everyone not Porsche and the winners being everyone who is and loves Porsche, as we received the magnificent Porsche 930 Turbo, which was needed to homologate the magnificent-er Porsche 934, 935 and 936. All of which got the job done, in their Group 4 (934), Group 5 (935) and Group 6 (936) FIA categories. Those jobs included outright and class wins at Le Mans, Spa, Nurburgring, Daytona, Sebring, et al, and of course becoming FIA Weltmeister, repeatedly…

Not too shabby Herr Fuhrmann and co.

The vehicle in detail

Thanks to its handsome looks and ability to be both a GT and Sports Car, the 930 went onto be so much more than a homologation special. Indeed, over 21,000 of the beasts were produced between 1975 and 1989. If the car has been loved and maintained, there’s no such thing as a bad 930, but there certainly are some that left Stuttgart, “better” (read: collectible) than the 20,000 others and in my humble opinion, those are the 1975 calendar year build cars and the 1989 MY 930’s. The 1975 models are the homologation cars and the 930 in its rawest from. They are the lightest 930 made and therefore have perky performance, highlighted by a peaky, pre-intercooler power delivery, which makes them a hoot to drive, but, you do have to be in the mood for it.

At the other end of the 930 time spectrum, we have the sublime 1989 930, a vehicle that not only gets 14 years of product development that, let’s be frank, no one does better than Porsche, but has a raft of 964 features and tweaks that add even more to the ownership experience. I am always surprised that none of the Porsche specialist media hasn’t tackled the 930 / 964 cross over cars, with most journalists concentrating on the low-hanging fruit, that is the vastly improved, 1989 only G50 gearbox and hydraulic clutch. To be fair, the G50 is brilliant and come 1989, a vastly overdue upgrade over the novel, but antiquated, typ 930 / 915 modified four speed box.

A factory RHD 1989 930 is a rare item, with less than 200 made, unfortunately none of which were delivered to Australia new. So, if you want the ultimate factory specification 930, you have to pick a good one from the UK, which can be a bit tricky, especially for people who don’t come from areas that sprinkle rust (salt…) on their winter roads. Where this particular example, chassis #712, differs from its circa 116 other siblings, is that it was ordered for South Africa, but was bounced to its 1st owner in Singapore, supposedly having never set a wheel in SA. Sold via Stuttgart Auto, Porsche AG’s official distributor for Singapore, the car was sold early in its life, circa 1990 to the 2nd owner, who owned and loved the car for the next 26 years, bringing the 930 to Australia, as a personal import circa 1999.

Come 2016 the 930 was purchased by the current owner, who was startled to see a genuine RHD 1989 930 for sale locally, especially a car that had been in a dry climate its whole life. I too was startled, as I didn’t think such an example existed! A deal was done and the 3rd owner set about detailing and improving the car, as only a Porsche enthusiast with a fresh set of eyes can. A complete engine rebuild was decided upon, a decision based on the engine being 30 years old, not on any glaring, outstanding mechanical issues. A new clutch and a raft of all the other “while you’re there” stuff was done by the Porsche experts at DHM in Brisbane, during the rebuild period.

Chassis #712 presents beautifully, has its logbooks from new and a nice paper trail of documentation, that every classic Porsche buyer likes to read. Now showing 125K Km’s and with only 3 owners from new, the 4th owner of this excellent, matching numbers example, of Porsche’s sublime 930 will be most impressed with the caring attitude of the previous owners and hopefully follow suit.
