Model history
The World Championship of Makes, an international championship for endurance sports car racing, received a significant surprise in March 1976 with the unveiling of the new Porsche 935 in its striking "flatnose" shape at the Mugello race. This innovative design, driven by racers such as Ickx, Mass and Stommelen in the years that followed, proved highly competitive. The "flatnose" 935 and 936 models dominated the 1976 and 1977 seasons, scoring four wins in eight world championship races and triumphing at Le Mans in each case. Despite these successes, Porsche restricted itself to reduced racing involvement from 1978 onwards due to concerns about the reaction of private customers who invested in more conventionally shaped models. Nevertheless, the distinctive "flatnose" style remained popular in road cars and was available as a special order for the Porsche 930 from 1981 to early 1989.
