Perhaps the most underrated vehicle in Porsche’s history, the 914 was developed by Porsche and Volkswagen to replace the 912 and the Karmann Ghia, respectively. By combining their efforts, the two companies hoped to keep costs down, allowing them to focus on creating what became an excellent addition to both of their lineups. Featuring a mid-mounted engine, bodies by Karmann, a remarkably roomy interior, a Targa top, and front/rear trunks, these cars are exceptional to drive and were only truly succeeded by the modern Boxster (and Cayman) which follow the same overall formula.
914s were available in both four- and six-cylinder variants, with the latter cars only being produced for three years and in significantly smaller quantities. Featuring a 2.0L Flat-6 from the 911 T producing 110hp and a choice of a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed sportomatic, the 914/6 was nearly as expensive as a standard 911 and offered similar performance in an arguably better balanced platform. Nowadays, 914 values have increased dramatically as enthusiasts rediscover their fabulous blend of performance, handling, and daily drivability, not to mention their place in the brand’s storied history.
