If someone described a car as a rear-engine, rear-wheel drive sports car manufactured in Germany, the obvious conclusion would always be Porsche. Then, in 1977 the unthinkable happened in Stuttgart. The engine was moved to the front, two more cylinders were added, arranged in a V-formation, and for the first time since 1948 the little car company from Gmund, Austria had a true GT car for the masses: the 928. This new step forward for Porsche did not come without hurdles, but it easily solidified their ability to meet market demands and produce anything they set their minds to.

The vehicle in detail

The technical specifications of the 928 are interesting. As the goal was to create a Luxury GT car to (at the time) hypothetically replace the famed 911, the car needed solid attributes of previously successful V8-powered cars as well as successful GT cars. All this, while still trying to meet new US safety and Emissions regulations. As a result, the 928 had similarities to that of the Chrysler 426 Hemi with 122MM Bore spacing, and early prototypes even had a 4-barrel carburetor for testing.

When it debuted at the 1977 Geneva Motor Show, it was well received due to its comfort and power as a GT car. However, it struggled to sell against the 911 and never really took off as Porsche anticipated. 18 years later, however, the 928 was still in production and saw quite a few variations, such as the S, S4, GT, and GTS models amongst others. Today the 928 has become somewhat of an icon for an era and has remained as a car with a cult-like following that still is embellished by enthusiasts around the globe.

The Porsche 928 on offer here, chassis #9289201411, is a 1979 model year, built just two years into the overall Porsche 928 production cycle. It is beautifully finished in Schwarz Metallic with complimenting ‘phone dial’ wheels as well as a Pasha interior, one of the best interiors Porsche ever offered, in our humble opinion! It has been very well maintained over the years and show just 32,548 original miles. Its first owner accumulated around 19,000 miles in the 23 years of ownership before changing hands with its second owner who resided in Michigan in the year 2002. During their ownership, the car only gained another 10,000 miles over 18 years before it was realized that the car was going to sit more and more as values climbed, so the decision was made to sell it. The second owner ended up selling the 928 to Casey Putsch of Perrysburg, Ohio, in December of 2019. Casey has a large YouTube automotive channel as well as being the founder of www.geniusgarageracing.com, which specializes in automotive-focused educational programming. For the next year, he used this 928 as part of his educational content and began a light refurbishment, which included:

  • Upholstered cloth interior with Pasha
  • New black upholstery on the fronts of the front seats and the backs of the rear seats
  • Leather wrap on the original steering wheel
  • New dash switches, knobs, etc
  • Plastic dash cover
  • Tune CIS fuel injection

After Casey’s ownership, the car made its way to Reno, Nevada, where it spent a little under 2 years, and was driven sparingly while receiving work to make it even nicer.

Today this example remains in very nice overall condition, and the interior looks great thanks to the freshened/upgraded Pasha interior. The front and rear seats have been reupholstered in factory Pasha that was ordered from Germany with no signs of wear. The door panel inserts have also been upgraded to Pasha. The carpet is original, as are the floor mats and the Blaupunkt cassette radio. The underside and engine bay are very clean and also indicative of a low-mile example. The car is very dry and obviously not driven in harsh conditions. There are no signs of any prior damage or rust repairs. An extensive mechanical service was carried out within the last 3 years, as well as a full refurbishment of the air conditioning, brake, fuel, intake,  vacuum systems, and much more costing well over $25,000. From our time spent enjoying this grand tourer, we admired how compliant and effortlessly fast this 928 is.

Accompanying the car is the original owner’s manual and numerous recent service records and invoices.

EXTERIOR

Body And Paint

The paint is not original but is in good condition. The Schwarz Metallic paint has deep and consistent shine throughout with a wonderful shimmer in direct sunlight. The gaps and body panel lines are all straight and tight.

Glass And Trim

The glass throughout the car appears to be all original, with the correct SEKURIT stampings on the side windows as well as the SIGLA branding on the front windscreen. The rubber trim surrounding the windows is in acceptable condition given the car’s age but could be replaced to match the redone interior.

Wheels

The factory ‘Phone dial’ wheels are in decent shape, showing some very minor rock chips on the rear passenger and front driver wheels. All four center caps could be replaced as the paint is chipping and faded.

Notable Flaws

The trim around the door windows and hatch windows need a little bit of attention. The wheels have a few very minor chips in them from use

INTERIOR

Seats And Surfaces

The Pasha seats while original in specification have been redone at some point as well as the inserts in the door card and present in really nice condition. The dashboard cover seems to have been replaced at some point as well, leaving a small gap above the air registers.

Functionality And Accessories

All functions such as the A/C, radio, lights, etc are all in working order.

ENGINE BAY AND TRUNK

Engine Bay

The engine bay remains in excellent and well-preserved condition. All the plastics are still deep and dark with correct stickers, hoses, and clamps throughout. Each body panel sticker is present as well.

Trunk Area

The trunk area retains the correct and original carpets and is clean and tidy.

Underside

A recent detail to the undercarriage reveals a well kept space with no rust or other issues to note.

MECHANICALS

Engine

This early 928 remains in very good mechanical order. It fires to life quickly and idles smoothly. Out on the road, it makes good consistent power and climbs easily through the rev range with no stumbles or flat spots in acceleration.

Transmission

The transmission shifts easily through the long gears. The recently installed clutch holds power nicely, and the pedal provides proper take-up and feedback.

Brakes And Suspension

The brakes feel smooth and balanced, bringing the car to a controlled and issue free stop. The suspension is smooth, comfortable, and compliant. The car handles beautifully and presents no odd road behavior or noises.

Tires

The DOT date codes appear to show 2017, but the tires remain in excellent condition with solid side walls and plenty of tread.
