Black Over Black 964 Turbo, Showing 94,009 km, With 993 RS Speedline Wheels, Power Adjustable/Heated Seats and Limited Slip Differential

When Porsche debuted the 930 Turbo in 1975, it was a revelation in the performance car world. With acceleration and top speed that pitted it against the best that Ferrari, Maserati, and Lamborghini had to offer at the time, the 930 proved that you didn’t need to sacrifice practicality or reliability to achieve breathtaking performance. The 930 became a true status symbol through the 1980s, and although it received numerous updates over the years, the general platform remained essentially unchanged until 1989. At this point, Porsche had already begun selling the all-new 964 generation 911, and it was time for them to develop a turbocharged version of that. Unveiled in March 1990, the 964 Turbo matched the 930 with its outrageous fender flares, big “tea tray” rear wing, and wide tires and looked to be a truly worthy successor to the outgoing legend.

The vehicle in detail

This 1991 Porsche 964 Turbo is a stunning example finished in a menacing black over black color scheme that accentuates the unique Turbo curves. Delivered new in July of 1991 at Porsche Stuttgart, it lived with the original owner until being sold to France in 2013. During this time, it was religiously maintained at Porsche Zentrum Dusseldorf with corresponding stamps in the service booklet, which is included with the car. Although this example remains largely unmodified, the original Cup 1 wheels that would have been on the car when new have now been replaced with a highly desirable set of multi-piece Speedline wheels from the 993 Carrera RS. The car does not wear its original paint but was resprayed to a very high standard and can only be noticed with a close inspection.

On the inside, black leather covers a set of heavily bolstered sports seats that are electrically adjustable and heated in this car. Sitting in front of the driver is the classic Porsche gauge layout with a large central tachometer and everything else off to the sides. The tachometer on this car looks to have been upgraded with a more modern unit that skews the dial to put the redline right in the driver’s eye line, which is exactly where you want it to be when the turbos spool up. A Becker Solitude head unit sits in the center of the dashboard and offers multiband radio as well as a cassette deck- with a cassette holder in the lower center console. Overall, the interior is in very good condition and represents a real turning point for the 911 with a pleasant blend of classic 911 simplicity paired with shades of the 993 that was just around the corner.

Before launching the 964 Turbo, Porsche had ambitions of developing a turbocharged variant of the M64 flat-6 found in the naturally aspirated 964 Carrera. Unfortunately, time constraints meant they would have to rely on the tried and true 3.3-liter flat-6 from the outgoing 930. Thankfully, the aftermarket had shown that there was plenty more power to extract from the old engine, and Porsche went to work, tuning it for smoother, less laggy power delivery, as well as greater performance. Power was up to 316 horsepower, then run through a 5-speed gearbox out to the rear wheels. Although the power delivery may have been smoother than on the 930, the 964 Turbo is a car that, when the turbos kick in, can catch you out and requires a truly skilled driver to extract all the performance.

Porsche produced 3,660 964 Turbos, but the number of genuinely original stock examples is far lower today due to their lively handling and ease of modification. This 964 Turbo represents an outstanding opportunity to experience the excitement of a rear-wheel drive, turbocharged 911 in a well-maintained package.
