After an extraordinary production run that lasted from 1963 to 1997, Porsche’s iconic air-cooled 911 was dramatically reinvented for the 1998 model year, introducing the 996 generation. While its pedigree and rear-engine design were unmistakably Porsche, this new generation of 911 heralded a major revolution. Changes included a completely redesigned body, a newly laid-out interior, and most notably, the engine was now water-cooled—a critical change necessary to keep contemporary high-performance engines at peak operating temperatures.
In 2001, the 911 Turbo made its much-anticipated return to the Porsche model lineup, boasting an impressive 420 brake horsepower. Porsche built the all-new 911 Turbo upon the all-wheel drive 911 Carrera 4 platform; a practice they had started with the preceding 993-generation 911 Turbo in 1996. All-wheel drive, the Porsche Stability Management system (PSM), and 18-inch wheels combine to make the model the best-handling production car that Porsche had ever made to this point.
For the 2002 model year, Porsche made minor restyling amends to the 911, sometimes referred to as the 996.2 iteration—which included a new shared headlight design, new front fascia, chassis reinforcement, and most importantly the 3.4-litre engine increased to 3.6-litres. Other comfort-focused features introduced in 2002 were a glove box, centre-mounted cup holders, an optional Bose stereo, and rain-sensing wipers. Despite these new comforts, the 911 Turbo Coupé remained an out-and-out driver’s car, with an exceptionally capable six-speed manual unit as Porsche’s sole transmission offering for the model.
This stunning 2002 model year 911 Turbo Coupé was delivered new to Italy on 14 January 2002, and it is presented in Lapis Blue Metallic over a full leather interior swathed in supple Metropol Blue hides. Additional factory specifications listed on an accompanying build report include the intentional lack of sunroof, parking assist system, Porsche CDR 22 remote six-disc CD changer, heated power front seats with memory function, and Bose stereo system.
The car remained in Italy for many years, and it was purchased by consignor from a Munich-based broker in May 2017. Since entering The Carrera Collection, this 911 Turbo Coupe has been driven just shy of 100 kilometres, and as presented today it indicated just 25,462 kilometres at the time of cataloguing. Gaining stock over time and for good reason, the 996-generation cars offer undeniable appeal from Porsche’s catalogue of modern classics.
