STOP POLICE! The Porsche brigade of the General Traffic Department, which was controlled from Driebergen, was in the 70s and 80s famous and infamous on the Dutch highways. The National Police had created this special brigade in order to provide rapid assistance, carry out (speed) checks or provide first aid in the event of an accident. Anyone who took to the Dutch road network at this time was always on the lookout for the white-orange 911s – which appeared out of nowhere on your rear bumper, with the imperative message on the light bar in your rear-view mirror. «Make like hell you’re stopping on the emergency lane!

It is not known exactly how many Porsches the General Traffic Department has involved over the years. But it is certain that between 1962 and 1997 several hundred 356s, 912s and 911s were used to ensure traffic safety on the freeway – and to make speeding motorists aware of the dangers. Original National Police Porsches are true collector’s items today. Exclusive, because of their special color scheme and equipment. And full of nostalgia, because who didn’t want to join the Porsche brigade as a small child – growing up in the 70s or 80s – when you were grown up?

Original National Police Porsches come onto the market sporadically – but at Peet Classics we managed to get hold of one anyway. The car in question is ‘Alex 12.85’, as this 1974 911 Targa was called. The car is cloaked in the original white livery with orange stickers, and is equipped with the full AVD equipment that was built into the AVD-911s at the time. In addition to the blue heavy-duty lights, megaphone, spotlights, light bars and sirens, the car still has its original transmitting equipment. The wiper on the rear window is also characteristic of the AVD Targas.

The odometer of the 911 Targa stands at 76,000 km. Needless to say, after its service with the AVD, this car ended up in the hands of an enthusiast who did not skimp on the maintenance of the technology or the cosmetic presentation. In 2015, the car was restored entirely to authentic AVD specifications. The sheet metal is still immaculate and has a deep luster, the stainless steel trim and chrome frames shine like new. The interior also shows no signs of use. The bucket seats are partially upholstered in velour, which is free of stains and damage. In the place of the back seat, a wooden frame has been installed to carry all kinds of tools at the time.

This police Porsche drives like a 1974 911 Targa should. The air-cooled, six-cylinder boxer produces a healthy 150 hp from its displacement of 2.7 liters. Everything under the hood is also in showroom condition; the result of a thorough engineering overhaul. Thicker stabilizer bars are part of the AVD specification, and improve the car’s handling. The 911 sits on beautiful two-tone Porsche ATS wheels, which have Goodyear Eagle tires around them in good condition.
