The most surprising results of Sotheby’s White Collection auction

Time and again, auction results cause uproar in the sports car world. The reasons for this range from conspicuously reluctant buyers to very rare vehicles and extremely high prices. RM Sotheby’s White Collection auction’s results were therefore eagerly awaited. At the beginning of December, a total of 56 almost exclusively white Porsches went under the hammer. We were particularly surprised by the following auction results.

The first Porsche 991 GT2 RS for over a million dollars – record result from the White Collection?

Yes, you read that right. The winning bid for a 2019 Porsche 911 GT2 RS was 1,006,000 dollars. A seven figure sum for a GT2. To our knowledge, there has never been a comparably priced Porsche 991 GT2 RS in the world. The average bid price for this model is barely half that. So why this extreme auction result at RM Sotheby’s?

First of all, there is the optional equipment. The buyer paid over 344,000 US dollars for the options alone. This example of the most powerful 911 model of all time (700 bhp!), therefore had a sticker price of almost 640,000 dollars! The Weissach package and lift system are of course on board, as is probably the largest selection of Porsche Exclusive options ever installed to a single GT2.

But probably the biggest price driver is the mileage and the associated condition. Because this is effectively a new car. This GT2 RS has 14 miles on the clock – fourteen! This is exactly how you would imagine a car for a museum or an exclusive collection.

A Porsche 991.1 Targa GTS for a quarter of a million US dollars

No less impressive is the final bid for this 2016 Porsche 911 Targa GTS painted in PTS Pearl Gloss White Metallic. The auction result was an almost unbelievable 257,600 dollars! Despite the PTS color and interesting features including Pepita seats, extended leather interior and a 7-speed manual transmission, the price is surprisingly high. After all, this is a regular, non-limited edition 911.

Once again, this is due to the mileage and condition. With 25 miles on the odometer, it also has just the same mileage as when it was delivered. Accordingly, the condition is naturally as good as new. And despite the extensive optional extras, this price is probably higher than the new price.

Porsche 992 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition also auctioned well above its MSRP

Reading the equipment list of this vehicle can make you dizzy. A Porsche 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition is already exclusive, but this one takes the cake. The pure white 992 – of course another in Paint-to-Sample color – has a whopping 175,000 euros worth of special equipment on board.

Starting with the leather-to-sample interior in Graphite Blue with Pebble Grey stitching, the customization at Porsche Exclusive extends to the wheel rims and the colour-coordinated lettering and trim strips in Gold Metallic.

The 992, once again equipped with a 7-speed manual gearbox, also arrives in its new garage in like-new condition. This Heritage Design 992 Targa, which was supposedly the last to be completed at the Zuffenhausen factory, has only covered 12 miles. Its new owner paid 511,000 dollars for this exclusive collector’s item.

Porsche books are amazingly stable in value

In addition to record prices for museum-condition Porsche cars, we were particularly struck by the auctioned books’ prices. Limited editions in particular fetched high prices. For example, RM Sotheby’s sold the Porsche 911 GT2 book written by Mäder and Koum for 1,080 US dollars. The book, which is limited to 993 copies, is available in the Elferspot Shop for 399 euros.

Details

A Porsche 911 R book in its original packaging, written by Mäder, Konradsheim and Gruber, also fetched almost twice its original price at 720 dollars. In our store, the Porsche 911 R primer is available for 387 euros, also new and in its original packaging. Perhaps a bidder in auction fever wanted to get the car and the corresponding book in one go? Because a virtually brand-new Porsche 911 R with 19 miles on the clock was also auctioned off. Its price? It clearly exceeded the targeted 700,000 to 800,000 dollars and was sold for 1,105,000 dollars.

Hardly any conclusions can be drawn for the Porsche market in general

Using the White Collection auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Texas as a yardstick for developments on the Porsche market seems a little presumptuous. The exhibits were too special, the mileages too low and the options lists too extreme. But the auction clearly showed one thing: good and special vehicles always sell well! If the overall package is right, the price will also be right in the end.
