The vehicle in detail

With the growing popularity of the Porsche 356 during the early 1950s, the idea for a lightweight, minimalist speedster was recommended as a strategy to grow sales in the US market by famed European sports car importer Max Hoffman. Porsche agreed with Hoffman and started offering the Speedster by 1954. It featured a cut-down windshield, side-curtain windows in place of roll-up glass, and bucket seats coupled with the standard powertrain for the 356, originally a 1.5-liter flat-four.

With the introduction of the 356 A, it offered numerous upgrades including an increase in power, thanks to a new 1.6-liter, 60 hp engine. Since its launch, the 356 Speedster has remained a sought-after model among enthusiasts due to its driver-first philosophy, which set the basis for Porsche’s brand trajectory.

Completed on May 24, 1957, chassis 83395 was delivered shortly thereafter through the very importer that recommended the introduction of the model, Max Hoffman, of Hoffman Motor Company in New York City. Unusually, it was specified with optional coupe seats, along with sealed-beam headlights. Although little is known about its earliest years, this Speedster was kept in good original condition throughout its existence. By the time its current caretaker, Stanley Gold, was searching for a Speedster to fit every production year, 83395 was found to be a suitable candidate for restoration. An astute Porsche collector, Mr. Gold only purchased matching-numbers examples for his growing Speedster collection.

As an early 1957 Speedster, this 356 A features a combination of T-1 and T-2 body features and was finished in red over beige leatherette from the factory. With its original opening panels still intact, Mr. Gold commissioned a full restoration of the Speedster in 2020 to be brought to show-quality standards. Carried out by Shamrock Motorsports of Portland, Oregon, and overseen by Mr. Gold’s in-house mechanic, the matching-numbers engine was rebuilt to factory specifications. In addition, a new clutch, fuel system, and Abarth-style four-exit exhaust were installed. Cosmetically, it was repainted, and its beige leatherette coupe seats were reupholstered. During this time, traditional Speedster bucket seats were also sourced and trimmed in matching upholstery, and are included with the sale of the 356. The result is a period-correct presentation that mirrors how the Speedster would have been delivered new.

Now just a few years following completion of its restoration, a mere 1,300 miles have been added to the odometer. It is accompanied by a copy of its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity and Kardex, as well as restoration records, tool kit, and jack. Although it has yet to be toured or shown extensively, the Speedster is offered today in show-quality condition, with hood and decklid panels stamped correctly and its matching-numbers engine confirmed by factory records. This 1957 Porsche 356 A Speedster is ready to be enjoyed by its next custodian.
