1956 Porsche 356 Pre-A Speedster
Chassis 81222 — One of the Final 12 Early Pre-A Speedsters Built
One of the purest expressions of the Porsche 356 Speedster, offered with exceptional long-term California provenance.
Introduced at the insistence of Max Hoffman for the American market, the Pre-A Speedster remains among the most desirable open Porsches ever produced. Lightweight, spartan, and designed for both road and weekend competition, just 4,854 Speedsters were built before the model gave way to the Convertible D. Early Pre-A cars occupy a particularly rare and sought-after position within that production run.
Chassis 81222 is finished in Signal Red over black and has remained with the same California owner since 1966—an unbroken 60-year period of single ownership in the Golden State. Continuously maintained by Frank’s Automotive in Sacramento and the subject of two careful restorations (the most recent completed in 1997), the car is documented as rust-free and accident-free, with numbers-matching body panels.
The original engine was replaced some years ago with a tightly sorted 912-derived unit bored to 1722 cc. The car is responsive, well-sorted, and ready for immediate enjoyment.
Genuine early Pre-A Speedsters with this combination of continuous California ownership, documented care, and preserved integrity are increasingly scarce. Opportunities of this caliber surface infrequently.
The long-term owner is available to discuss the car’s history in detail.
