Porsche 911 S

Porsche 911 S

Targa, 1969

Highlights

  • Exceptional history
  • Only 25 700 km
  • Original car, matching numbers

A highly collectible 1969 Porsche 911 S Targa with exceptional Finnish provenance. Originally owned by the Wihuri family, whose company Wihuri-Yhtymä Oy served as the official Porsche importer in Finland, and later by Armi Ratia, the founder of Marimekko, this matching-numbers example represents a unique piece of Porsche and Finnish cultural history.

Finished in rare special-order Signal Green with sport seats, the car remains highly original and unrestored, showing just 25,700 documented kilometers. Authenticated by Porsche and accompanied by historical documentation, this is an exceptionally rare opportunity to acquire one of only 614 examples produced for the 1969 model year.

The vehicle in detail

Our car represents a truly significant piece of Finnish automotive history. Delivered new to Finland by Wihuri-Yhtymä Oy and first registered on 23 May 1969, it remained within the Wihuri family until 1973. Wihuri-Yhtymä served as the official Porsche importer in Finland until 1983, adding an exceptional layer of provenance to this already rare and desirable example. The car was later acquired by the renowned Finnish design icon Armi Ratia, the visionary founder and driving force behind Marimekko.

In 1978, the car changed hands for only the third time and then remained with the same owner for an extraordinary 43 years. Accompanying the car is a partial history file, including copies of the original registration certificates. Finished in stunning Signal Green — a highly desirable special-order color — the exterior was professionally repainted during the third ownership while preserving the car’s authentic character. The interior features the optional sport seats, while the original seats are also included with the car. Based on the documented history, it is highly likely that the current odometer reading of just 25,700 km is genuine. When inspected for Finnish historic vehicle registration in 1998, the odometer showed only 24,673 km.

Remarkably, the car remains highly original and has never undergone a full restoration — only careful maintenance and preservation throughout its life. An undercoating was applied early on to protect the original underbody, which has helped preserve the car exceptionally well.

The car has been authenticated by Porsche Center Helsinki, confirming that both the engine and gearbox are matching numbers. The official Porsche birth certificate is also expected to arrive shortly.

Mechanically, the car has recently benefited from a service that included a new fuel pump and partial renewal of the fuel lines. The braking system was serviced a few years ago, including new brake hoses. The car starts immediately, drives beautifully, and delivers the engaging character that made early 911s legendary. Even the Targa roof panel remains impressively tight and rigid, having seen very little use over the years.

The 1969 model year — the so-called “B-program” cars introduced in August 1968 — marked an important evolution for the 911. Most notably, Porsche extended the wheelbase by 57 mm, significantly improving stability and cornering behavior. The 911 S also received lightweight alloy Ate brake calipers and the legendary Bosch mechanical fuel injection system, increasing output to 170 horsepower — an impressive figure in a car weighing only around 1,000 kg. Additional performance upgrades included Koni shock absorbers, anti-roll bars, and 5.5-inch Fuchs wheels fitted from new with Michelin XWX tires. In total, Porsche produced only 614 examples of the 1969 911 S Targa, making this an exceptionally rare collector’s piece today.

Finding an early, matching-numbers 911 S Targa with such provenance, originality, documented ownership history, and low mileage is extraordinarily rare. This is not only a highly collectible Porsche, but also an important piece of Finnish motoring and cultural history.
