Although the 930 served as the homologation basis for Porsche’s fearsome 934 racer, it was no stripped-down track weapon. Turbos were luxuriously equipped, with a long list of standard equipment, including air conditioning, full leather, rear wiper, headlamp washers, and a stereo. Further options, including a power sunroof, were offered as well.
Serving as the homologation basis for Porsche’s fearsome 934 racer, the first-generation 911 Turbo, known as the type 930, introduced turbocharging to the German automaker’s production lineup for the first time. Produced from 1975 to 1989, early Turbos featured a 3.0-liter Carrera RSR engine with a single turbocharger for significant power gains. The flat-six engine was upped to 3.3-liters in 1978 and gained an intercooler for added performance. With its flared wheel arches and flamboyant rear spoiler, the 930 was immediately recognizable and quickly became among the most iconic models Porsche had ever produced. The distinctive Targa and Cabriolet models joined the 911 Turbo lineup in 1987, retaining all of the Coupe’s innate character and charm, while offering top-down, wind-in-the-hair motoring.
Manufactured in January 1989, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet offered here is one of the last to roll off Porsche’s Zuffenhausen line. It left the factory equipped with the much sought-after later-specification G50 five-speed manual transaxle. The Porsche was delivered new to the United States, fitted with the emissions-beating 256-horsepower engine, and finished in its current configuration of Grand Prix White over a Marine Blue leather interior. It was configured from the factory with a shorter gearstick, supple leather seats, a Porsche CD-2 stereo, a limited slip differential, and an additional amplifier.
Significantly, this 911 Turbo Cabriolet was previously a member of the world renowned White Collection of Houston, Texas, from 2010 to 2015. As expected, the vehicle is meticulously documented with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, confirming its numbers-matching engine and gearbox, as well as invoices detailing parts acquired and work performed by Porsche of North Houston and Rector Motor Car Co. in California. Among the most important work carried while in the White Collection is an engine-out service in September 2010 that included a valve adjustment and various related repairs.
Well-specified from new and presented in impressive condition throughout with just 17,796 miles showing on the odometer, this is a handsome example of one of the most desirable air-cooled 911 models from the final production year of the coveted G Series cars.
