PORSCHE 944 2.7 (1989)

The Porsche 944 was unveiled in September 1981 at the Frankfurt Motor Show to sit above its cheaper 924 sister. Still front engined with a rear transaxle layout, it retained the superbly balanced handling but now featured aggressive wider bodywork, giving it a similar appearance to the homologation special Carrera GT plus a genuine Porsche engine, something the 924 was deprived of with its VW Audi powerplant.

The 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with two balancing shafts shared many basic dimensions with the bigger 928’s V8. The 8-valve engine produced 163 hp at 5,800 rpm and won much praise at the time for its flexibility, smooth performance, and outstanding efficiency.

The vehicle in detail

This was shortly replaced by a 2.7 litre variant for one year only in 1989 offering more power and torque to fit alongside the high-performance Turbo variants and finally a 3.0 for the final S2 edition.

Today, it’s hard to believe that the earliest examples are now over 40 years of age as unlike a classic 911, the driving experience totally belies its age. This is further emphasised when fitted with the facelifted interior featuring a new oval dash and switchgear also found in the 964, which significantly enhanced the whole driving experience.

Back to ‘89

A new Porsche delivery is one way to start your year with a bang, this example was first delivered on January 1st 1989 by supplying dealer Cooper Exeter LTD. Finished in Velvet Red Metallic with complimenting Burgundy leather interior, the seats with Burgundy and White pin stripe inlays. Optional equipment included deactivated catalytic converter, headlamp washers, white front fog lights, anti-theft device for wheels, cloth door panel inserts, alarm systems, ABS Braking System and a sunroof.

Whilst there is a gap in the history between 2006 and 2012, it is still very comprehensive, with some large expenditure in recent years including a £10,000 glass out respray.

It’s current owner then purchased the car is 2015 and clearly saw it for all it could be. The next buyer has him to thank for its current condition with an excess of £22,000 in invoicing from the help and expertise from PARR Specialists in Porsche who have been maintaining it since his ownership.

The most recent invoice in May this year included a 48k mile service, brake fluid change, a new water pump, belt change and stripping the front of the engine to carry out a cam and balance belt change.

Our thoughts…

We believe the 944 is due its day and with the 80’s and 90’s cars currently in high demand, with pop up lights, it’s starting to look really cool. It won’t take long to quickly filter out the scruffy, less loved examples and realise there are not actually that many good ones left to choose from. You only need to compare the 911 prices from the same era to realise they are great value, plus something the 911s notoriously lacked… easily accessible luggage space. The large pop-up rear window into the boot means plenty of room to throw in the weekend bags for a much-deserved road trip.

A car to use and hold onto? With its enviable chassis balance, efficient heating, superior economy, and ergonomics to the 911, we think so. This is a modern classic that can still be used guilt free as intended, whilst knowing you have made a sound investment too.
