During the production period up to 1991, further developed versions of the 944 appeared with changes in engine performance and equipment. A particularly exciting innovation was the 944 S2, introduced in 1988, with a newly developed 3.0 liter naturally aspirated engine with four-valve technology and two overhead camshafts, which was considered the in-line four-cylinder with the largest displacement in a production car when it was presented. The interior design and the powerful appearance of the wide body were adopted from the 944 Turbo model. The Cw value was thus further improved and an underfloor diffuser at the rear also optimized the air flow.
With the 944 S2, a Porsche transaxle model was finally offered as a convertible. However, the production process was quite complex, as Porsche first delivered the bodyshell of the coupé to ASC (American Sunroof Cooperation) in Weinsberg. There, not only was the roof removed, but the body was reinforced with a second welded-in floor. The windshield frame was shortened by around 60 mm and the glass dome over the trunk was replaced by a sheet steel boot lid. The vehicle was then reworked in Zuffenhausen. From 1989 to 1991, a total of just 6,980 Porsche 944 S2 convertibles were built.
The Porsche 944 S2 Cabrio offered here in the classic color combination Guards Red with black leather was first registered to Porsche AG in Stuttgart in October 1990. the convertible changed hands in 1992 and was registered in Oedheim in the Heilbronn district. in 1999, the car passed into third ownership in Markgröningen and has now been in current ownership in Bietigheim-Bissingen since 2013. The powerful four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine develops an output of 211 hp and 280 Nm of torque. Not far off the performance data of a 944 Turbo, however, this engine is much less complicated and cheaper to maintain. With a current mileage of around 147,000 km, a traceable maintenance history and an excellent state of care, this reliable endurance runner is a true Porsche classic with character. The vehicle is equipped with a robust 5-speed manual gearbox, an electric soft top and air conditioning. The timing belt with rollers, V-ribbed belt, distributor cap and water pump with thermostat were only replaced in 2023 in Reiner Telkamp's Porsche workshop. The black soft top and the clutch have also already been renewed. The Porsche features an original signature of German rally legend Walter Röhrl, which can be removed if desired. The new owner can look forward to a particularly well-maintained example of the Porsche 944 S2 Cabrio with high everyday usability, pulling power and great handling, which is even extremely economical for a sports car from Zuffenhausen.
