This Porsche 959 Komfort is one of the 179 examples produced in 1988, with its first German delivery at the Stuttgart plant on June 13, 1988. Subsequently, the first owner registered the vehicle for road use in Esslingen near Stuttgart on June 15, 1988. The first service followed shortly afterwards on July 8, 1988 at Porsche in Stuttgart with a mileage of 3,215 km. One year later, the owner presented the vehicle for a special emissions test, again at Porsche in Stuttgart. The vehicle then changed hands for the first time, to a doctor from Berlin. Over the next two decades in Berlin, the 959 was regularly serviced at Porsche. Starting on 30.03.1990 with 7,346 km mileage, then with 18,294 km, then at 20,112 km, again with 21,560 km and finally with 22,648 km on 30.08.2011. In addition, the vehicle changed owners in the meantime, but remained in Berlin.

The vehicle in detail

After many years in Berlin, this 959 left the Federal Republic of Germany and went to Switzerland, where it was serviced on 12.08.2015 at the Porsche Center Geneva with a mileage of 22,740 km. In the summer of 2018, it was sold at a German auction near Düsseldorf with 22,841 km. On 02.06.2020 it was serviced again at Porsche in Stuttgart with 22,900 km. The vehicle was then sent to Italy, where it remained until 2023. During this period, inspections were carried out at 22,948 and 25,441 km mileage. In the same year, the car was purchased by our company, in the course of which we also had a Classic Data report carried out, at which time the 959 had a mileage of 25,527 km. Since then, the car has only been driven occasionally. After a meticulous inspection with a verifiable mileage of 27,550 km, this collector's item is now being offered for sale.

The Porsche 959

With this super sports car derived from the 911, Porsche presented a road racer in 1985 the likes of which the world had never seen before. It cost an incredible DM 420,000. By comparison, the most expensive Mercedes at the time cost a quarter of that. Despite the high price, Porsche lost a lot of money with every vehicle built, which was due to the costly development and production work. Shortly after its market launch, individual examples were traded at up to DM 700,000. Originally, the 959 was intended to concentrate on rallying, where it would drive its rivals into the ground. In line with the new Group B regulations, Porsche therefore developed the 959 on the basis of the successful 911 SC. According to the regulations, however, at least 200 vehicles had to be produced, which Porsche wanted to achieve with a road version for exclusive regular customers. In fact, the Zuffenhausen-based company wowed everyone with the prototype at the 1983 IAA and received euphoric applause. This led to an increase in the originally planned production figures of almost 50 percent. A test run with 959 prototypes at the Dakar Rally in 1985 ended prematurely due to rough contact with boulders. However, the final version of the 959 won the overall victory in the world's toughest rally the following year.

Even before the first race, it was clear that four-wheel drive was the only way to beat the tough competition. Only the rear lights from the 911 at the time were fitted to the outer skin, the rest was specially developed for the 959. The requirements were clear very early on: all-wheel drive and a rear engine. It was therefore clear that the 959 was to be the ultimate expansion stage of the 911, which was the ideal basis for the very ambitious plans. The 2.8-liter six-cylinder boxer turbo engine was based on the engine concept that won the 24 Hours of Le Mans several times in the 1980s with the legendary 956 and 962 prototypes. Installed in the 959 road car, it produced 450 hp, catapulting the vehicle to well over 300 km/h and making it the fastest road car in the world at the time.

In the fall of 1983, the public learned that the Group B Porsche would have the following structure: variable, electronically controlled all-wheel drive, six-cylinder boxer engine with air-cooled cylinders, water-cooled cylinder heads with four-valve technology and turbocharging by two turbochargers in register shift, six-speed gearbox, double wishbone suspension front and rear with variable height adjustment, four shock absorbers per wheel and safety tires on 17-inch rims. The design of the 959 is still polarizing today. The design of the front, rear and underside of the car was the result of a dialog between the wind tunnel and materials testing. The requirements were: aerodynamically optimal, aesthetically balanced and consistently weight-saving. The sophisticated aerodynamics of the super sports car can only come into their own if the ground clearance is adapted to the flow conditions and is consistently maintained. A top speed of over 300 km/h requires the lowest possible ground clearance. An electronically controlled hydraulic system automatically adjusts the vehicle height to the individual circumstances. It lowers the 959 automatically at high speeds and can be raised again by the driver at low speeds. Together with Bilstein, Porsche also developed a variable shock absorber setting for an ideal driving experience.

In technological terms, the 959 was the measure of all things at the time and far ahead of its competitors. The outstanding technical features and performance of the 959 are inconspicuous to the untrained eye at first glance and are still only known among true enthusiasts. Many stories of challenging development work and subsequent successes make the Porsche 959 an icon of the 1980s. Porsche only produced a total of 292 units, 113 of which were built in 1987 and 179 in 1988. The total number of units is divided into 263 comfort versions suitable for everyday use and 29 extreme S versions.
