The vehicle in detail

The Porsche newsroom website provided some background on the 964 series of the 911: “The third generation of this sports car, known internally as the type 964, combined the traditional silhouette of the classic model with state-of-the-art technology. It was also a bet on the future of the company, which was experiencing economic challenges – a bet that this third generation would win.”

Specifically, on the 911 Carrera 2’s debut: “The 911 Carrera 2 with rear-wheel drive followed in 1989. At the same time, the Cabriolet and Targa versions also celebrated their debut alongside the Coupé. What’s more, under that familiar body – in practice only modified by having integrated bumpers – 85% of the 964 also consisted of newly designed parts.”

And on the car’s power and handling: “At 3.6 litres, the air-cooled flat-six engine reached new heights in terms of displacement, and delivered 250 (horsepower) in the Carrera 2/4 models. One of the technical innovations in the boxer engine was its twin-spark ignition, which Porsche had originally developed for greater operational reliability in aircraft engines. At the same time, the aerodynamic lift at the rear axle was almost completely eliminated due to the rear spoiler now being retractable.”

It’s no wonder the desirability and collectability of the 964 series 911 cars hit warp speed over the past few years.

Offered here is a stock 1991 Porsche 911 Carrera 2 Cabriolet in a beautiful Grand Prix White over Marine Blue (under a matching blue fabric power-operated top) combination. It has been owned by the same individual for the past 21 years. Showing 83,398 miles on its odometer, the car has traveled just 1,680 miles per-year on average. The 911’s overall superb condition together with its appealing colors make it a 964 series car worth serious consideration.

The car’s options label decodes as follows:
158 – Cassette Radio, Blaupunkt Reno SQR 46
437 – 8-way electrical seat, left
454 – Automatic speed control
494 – Amplifier

The condition of the car’s exterior Grand Prix White paint is lustrous, evenly glossy, and free of damage across the entire body. Bumpers fore and aft show no evidence of parking-lot damage or road rash. The classic flag-style side-view mirrors have been properly cared for. The classic Porsche exterior color appeals to many Porsche enthusiasts because is showcases the many design cues on the cars: the horizontal round-ended air intakes on the lower front fascia; the wraparound combination driving light and marker; the H4 headlight bezels; the seductive trimline on the lower side body panels; the air-intake grille on the speed-deployed rear spoiler; the script rear-deck model designation; and of course, the Porsche hood crest. All these distinctions are seen in perfect contrast on the bright white background. The car’s windshield and side windows are clear and undamaged; lighting lenses are likewise perfect. Indeed, the entire car retains its fully stock-from-the-factory look and equipment. Factory-mounted, Cup-style 17-inch alloy wheels (with Porsche-crest color centercaps) are unblemished. BFGoodrich® G-Force Performance tires are mounted.

Inside, the Marine Blue leather upholstery is trimmed with white piping, an optional touch. Door trim blends both matching leather in the classic Porsche angle-striped-design, with dark blue carpeting matching the cabin. The dark blue color is carried onto the steering wheel (with airbag) and fully across the dash. Interior execution is a Porsche hallmark, and it is evident here. On front bucket and rear jump seats, the leather has been nicely maintained; expected creasing on the driver’s seat (and very slight creasing on the passenger seat cushion) are the only indications of age and use. The car’s instrument cluster retains the five-opening design going back many years in the 911. All instruments have clear lenses; all instrument markings (including the fluorescent indicator needles) are crisp, sharp, and unfaded. Both the analog quartz clock and the left-of-the-steering-column ignition are familiar from past 911s. The 5-speed manual-transmission shifter (topped by the stock shift knob) is console-mounted forward of the emergency-brake handle. The sole deviation from stock is an upgraded audio head unit in the factory-radio location. Cabin carpeting in dark blue Is protected in the footwells with Porsche-embroidered carpet mats. The front trunk (frunk) is in carpeted, and is in excellent condition; it is the site of the audio amplifier.

The rear engine compartment is home to the 3.6-liter, (boxer-style) horizontal 6-cylinder engine. The engine bay is clean, orderly, and complete. Even the information stickers applied at the Zuffenhausen factory remain in place (as indeed are all factory-placed identification stickers throughout the car). Viewed from below, the car’s chassis is free of any sign of damage that might have arisen from too-aggressive driving styles or track use. Like the engine bay, the chassis is clean, complete, and orderly. Some indication of engine-oil “weepage”—often seen on these split-case engines—is present.
