There are no gaps in the history.

The experts agree that the 968 is an insider tip among youngtimers.
A 968 in the Clubsport version is not only a fast and uncompromising car on the race track,
er is gradually gaining respect among the illustrious group of 911 drivers.
Good examples are likely to see a significant price increase.
In the early 1990s, Porsche was in more trouble than a politician on a lie detector test. The economic downturn had hit the company like a sledgehammer, and not even the wonderfully fancy sports cars could escape the grim realities of the market. Only when the 911 based on the 993 came onto the market in '93 did Porsche's fate begin to look less like a Greek tragedy.
Then, in '96, the Boxster came onto the scene and helped Porsche shake off the financial blues. But before the Boxster could work its magic, Porsche, in a moment I can only describe as "let's try anything," decided to give the world an interim model, the 968, which was based on the bones of the old 924/944 series , which has been around since the days when bell-bottoms were cool – the mid-70s.

The 968, God bless him, was as successful as a chocolate teapot. It was a mishmash of old ideas at a time when Porsche's cool factor was as low as a snake's belly. It was overpriced and underwhelming, and sales were more disappointing than a rainy barbecue. Porsche dreamed of selling 25,000 units a year. And the reality? In their best year they barely made more than 5,000 units.
But even a stopped clock is right twice a day, and the 968 had potential – it just had to be faster, lighter and cost as much as a decent watch rather than a small yacht.

Porsche must have heard the collective sigh of the car world because they soon launched the 968 Club Sport. Unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in '92, this no-frills model was just what the doctor ordered. It was a diet version of the regular 968 – less weight, more fun.
Thanks to its sparse safety features, this beast wasn't even registered in the USA. Porsche decided to offer it in Europe, Great Britain, Japan and Australia, where people obviously like to live dangerously.
The Club Sport retained its sibling's steel bodywork but was fitted with stiffer dampers and a ride height that's below my expectations for a quiet day at the office. The wheels were a standard offering that would normally require selling a kidney.

Under the hood was the Porsche M44/43 engine, which had received a refresh treatment. It featured a new VarioCam system that ensured the engine was busier than a puppy at mealtime. The result was more pulling power in the low and mid-range, making it as powerful as a boxer in the first round.
Club Sport was a riot in a canary yellow suit – loud, proud and unashamedly sporty. Inside it was as bare as a monk's living room. Porsche had thrown out everything that didn't make the car faster. The seats were body-hugging Recaros, and anything that could be removed was removed. It was an exercise in weight loss more effective than any diet.
In a rare act of generosity, Porsche allowed buyers to choose from a range of colors. And for those who wanted a little more comfort, there were options like a sunroof and air conditioning, which, if chosen, meant a more powerful battery and a dual radiator fan – because even Porsche knows that some like it hot.
This lightweight rocket was faster than a hiccup, hitting 60 mph in just under 6 seconds. But Porsche, being Porsche, played it all down, probably to avoid the hassle of reapplying for type approval.
Ultimately, Club Sport was a sensation for everyone who enjoyed driving and not just being seen. But he wasn't the knight in shining armor for Porsche's sales figures. A respectable 1,923 examples were built before production stopped in '95.
So there you have it, the 968 Club Sport: a car that came, saw and conquered a tiny part of the world and proved that sometimes less really is more. And in true Porsche fashion, it was a reminder that even in their darkest days, they could still pull something pretty brilliant out of a hat.
