The Porsche 993 is an automobile series from Porsche AG and the successor to the 964 series. It is the last model of the Porsche classic 911 with an air-cooled boxer engine.

The chassis was revised: with 20 mm wider rear tires, a reinforced brake system with perforated discs and the improved ABS (ABS 5). The engine was fitted with maintenance-free valve control with hydraulic tappets. Central locking and an immobilizer with alarm system were standard.

The vehicle in detail

The maintenance costs for the 993 are lower than for its predecessors, which earned it a reputation as a particularly reliable 911. The sales name Porsche 911 was retained, as with the 964. Porsche also retained the engine principle with air cooling. For customers who consider themselves "cast-iron", it is therefore the last "real" 911, as the successor Porsche 996 also introduced a completely redesigned engine with water cooling.

The 993 is regarded as the most mature and best 911 with an air-cooled boxer engine. As it is the last Porsche 911 with an air-cooled engine, it has a special status in fan circles. On the used car market, 993s now fetch collector's prices. Prices for 993s with comparable mileage are almost always higher than those of its successor model, the 996.

Since its introduction, the design of the Porsche 964 has not met with the approval of all Porsche fans. Many found the bumpers too bulky, although the basic features of the classic Porsche 911 were never touched despite the innovations. The bumpers of the 993, which were more strongly integrated into the body shape, were intended to make the silhouette appear more elegant. Chief designer Harm Laagaf, who was largely responsible for this with his team, was strongly oriented towards the original model, in which the body and bumpers formed a single unit. Overall, the 993 had a very harmonious appearance, as the new bumpers also integrated the headlights more strongly into the bodywork, so that they no longer stood out from the front of the car like the so-called "torpedo tubes" of the previous models. The continuous light strip at the rear was further slanted and, together with the strongly accentuated rear fenders, formed a successful finish.Despite the far-reaching design changes, the unmistakable basic shape of the Porsche 911 remained as specified.

The interior of the 993 had not changed much from its predecessor. As before, five round instruments with transmitted light technology were installed in the classic arrangement. The most obvious differences between the 964 and 993 are the redesigned steering wheel, which looks more elegant than on the 964 despite the airbag fitted as standard. The door handles were also revised and adapted to the "flowing" body design of the 993.

Overall, the car was designed to be more comfortable. Despite many comfort and safety extras that were already available in the 964, such as driver and front passenger airbags, power steering and power brakes with ABS and electric windows, the unladen weight of the 993 Coupé only increased by 20 kg compared to its predecessor.

Porsche 993 - model years 1996-1998, after two years Porsche revised the 993 Carrera again. The Carrera models received the VarioRam system from the Carrera RS. Larger valves also increased the power output in the M64/21 and 22 to 285 hp.

With the 993 Carrera S, Porsche introduced another new model in 1997, while the Porsche 993 Carrera RS was removed from the model range, the 993 Carrera S was added. It is usually said that the Porsche 993 Carrera S was primarily launched to offer a Tiptronic Carrera with turbo look. The main visual distinguishing feature between the S and 4S is the extendable spoiler on the engine cover. On the 4S, the air vents are continuous, whereas on the 993 Carrera S they are divided vertically in the middle. Unlike the Carrera 4S, however, the rear-wheel drive Carrera S had the brake system of the regular Carrera.
