Model history
- The Porsche 996, introduced in 1997, marked a new era for the legendary 911 series. Compared to its predecessor, the 993, the 996 was the first 911 with a water-cooled boxer engine. It offered several engine options, including a 3.4-liter six-cylinder with 300 hp and a 3.6-liter with 320 hp. This move from air to water cooling was controversial, but the 996 established itself successfully and paved the way for future 911 generations.
