During its early years, the 911 was updated frequently as Porsche refined the famously idiosyncratic design to improve the car. One of the most significant changes came for 1969, when the rear wheels were moved aft, reducing the amount of weight behind the rear axle line. For 1970, the engine displacement increased from 2.0 to 2.2 liters, bringing additional power to all three trim levels then on offer. While displacement and power were increased again for 1972, these motors had reduced compression and lost some of the revvy, effervescent character of the 2.2 liter cars.
