With the launch of the new 964-generation 911 in 1989, Porsche delivered perhaps the biggest update to the long-standing model since its inception. The 911’s designers made use of contemporary in-house technology, with the 964 benefitting from many advanced features developed for the mighty 959. The new 911 Turbo was presented in 1991, retaining the 3.3-litre engine of the previous generation, but putting out an additional 20 horsepower.

Despite the power increase, many customers wanted more. Porsche answered with the 3.6-litre Turbo in 1993, equipped with a new flat-six engine based on the unit fitted to the 911 Carrera 4. Producing 360 brake horsepower, the new model had larger 18-inch wheels, lower suspension, a front anti-roll bar, and a more aggressive look.
Due to the impending arrival of the next-generation type-993 911, the 3.6-litre turbocharged variant of the type 964 was available for just one year from 1993 to 1994. A mere 1,587 examples were produced, vastly undercutting the 4,017 type-964 Turbo 3.3s that had been built from 1991 to 1992.
