The history of the company dp motorsport

The success story of dp motorsport, founded by Ekkehard Zimmermann in 1973, began with a rather atypical commitment: in cooperation with the Motul company, the designer from Bensberg developed and built almost 30 bodies for Formula V and Super V racers. With their idiosyncratic elegance, even these successful Motul racing vehicles clearly stood out from the majority of the formula competitors, who otherwise could only be distinguished from one another by their stickers.

As early as the Motul era, Zimmermann modified the rear and front spoilers of a Porsche 911 at the request of a customer. The design caused a stir and quickly aroused the interest of the Kremer brothers, who ran a Porsche workshop in Cologne and were heavily involved in racing. In 1975, dp motorsport developed a completely new racing body for Kremer based on the Porsche 911, which played a major role on German racetracks in the years that followed and won many championships.

About us

In 1979, a Kremer-dp conversion of the Porsche 935, the "K3" (with Klaus Ludwig as one of the drivers), was even able to win the overall victory of the 24-hour race of Le Mans – neither before nor after a so-called production car was so successful . The K3 not only dominated European racing championships with ease, they also celebrated similar successes in the USA with victories in the IMSA series. When the C-series was created, dp motorsport was also at the forefront again.

In 1980 the "CK5" was built for the Kremer brothers, followed by a few more C-types for the Joest Racing Team – vehicles that largely dominated the racing scene. From the racing vehicles, Ekkehard Zimmermann developed his ever more comprehensive modifications of the road models. In the end, only the roof of the 935 conversions was "Original Porsche", even the doors — although still in the Porsche design — were made of fiber-reinforced plastic. The interest in the dp design was huge, the 935-I and its successor, the 935-II, not only found fans and buyers in Europe and the USA, but worldwide.

E. Zimmermann's love of design has never left out a Porsche model. It was never about letting his imagination run wild. He strives to optimize the given car body, to find the important lines, to emphasize them more clearly, to connect them harmoniously and to design the transitions between the different body areas in such a way that the whole car appears to have been cast in one piece. The basic shape – whether it's a "classic" Porsche or the 928 / 944 family – is always recognizable.

The "944 Cargo" created in the 1980s can be considered a highlight, the conversion of a Porsche 944 into the perfectly styled "most beautiful station wagon in the world". And there is also a significant example of the technical perfection of dp motorsport products, a racing 962 (Bj.83), which was modified in cooperation with the TÜV type test center in Cologne to such an extent that the 650 hp biturbo bolide got street legal. This vehicle is still on the streets today and continues to cause a stir.

Ekkehard Zimmermann recently caused a sensation on the race track with the "996 dp5" (also called "Turbinchen") for the brothers Uwe and Jürgen Alzen. On the maiden voyage in May 2003 in the 24-hour race on the Nürburgring, they immediately set the previous lap record and secured pole position in qualifying. Lap records and victories became almost a matter of course in the following races.

At the end of 2005, planning began for a new, unusual project: the dp Gallardo. Together with Raeder Motorsport, it was decided to build a Lamborghini with a carbon fiber body to achieve overall victory in the 24-hour race at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

Building on decades of experience, dp motorsport has developed into a specialist in the production of absolutely unique items. Above all, the backdating of 964 models to partial or complete optics of the F model from the 70s is becoming increasingly popular. As with every vehicle, no customer wishes remain unfulfilled in terms of interior, exterior or drive. Whether restoration, complete assembly on a body shell, procurement of a base vehicle or installation of accessories, everything is possible in the dp specialist workshop.

Son Patrick and his crew, with the father's active support, will continue to ensure that the name "dp motorsport" stays on everyone's lips in the Porsche scene.
