Well-documented 356C Coupe, sold new by Gus Mozart Inc. of Palo Alto, California, to D.J. Gray from Stanford, California, on April 12, 1965. Originally finished in Signal Red with a Black interior, this 356 was equipped with an outside mirror, CoCo mats, chrome wheels, headrests, Blaupunkt AM/FM radio, and seat belts. Later repainted Black, this is a well-sorted driver, retaining a strong degree of originality, long-term California provenance, and recorded mileage from new.

The vehicle in detail

The ownership history is the highlight: the 356 remained with its first owner, D.J. Gray, from 1965 to 1989, then passing to Frank Enea, who owned it from 1989 to 1997. The current owner acquired the 356 in 1997 with 57,463 miles recorded. With mileage records dating back to the original purchase, this California black-plate 356C currently has just 60,478 miles from new, further reflecting long-term stewardship and limited use.

The paintwork presents well with some patina. The body is very straight, with good gaps and panel fit, and the exterior retains its original components and glass. The interior is very original with a preservation character, featuring black upholstery, original seats and carpeting, with a VDM steering wheel and VDO instrumentation. The chrome-plated wheels are mounted to Vredestein Sprint Classic 165 70 HR15 tires with the correct stance. The undercarriage is solid, rust-free, and original.

Service records document dealer-performed services for multiple decades. The second owner, Frank Enea, worked with David Loop European, who performed significant mechanical work that included a complete engine rebuild, installation of motor mounts, replacement of front and rear shock absorbers, rebuilding of the front brake calipers, replacement of axle boots, repair of the window regulator, cleaning and undercoating of the front compartment, replacement of shift bushings, and seat-rail-related work. The invoice also lists engine-related parts including pistons and cylinders, rings, bearings, carburetor kits, and related components, reflecting the depth of the mechanical work performed.

In 2018, at 58,121 miles, the 356 received recommissioning and service work by Don Wise’s Autowerks that included draining old fuel from the tank, replacement of the fuel filter, oil and filter service, valve adjustment, spark plugs, transmission fluid service, generator belt replacement, ignition timing and dwell adjustment, carburetor adjustment, battery and charging-system checks, brake hose replacement, brake bleeding, axle hub seals and O-rings, and new brake pads. Custom Alignment documents mounting and balancing of five tires, suspension and alignment inspection, and alignment work.

Don Wise’s Autowerks performed further service in 2021 and 2022 included replacement of fuel hoses and fuel filter, battery cable repair, installation of a battery maintainer, replacement of the 6-volt battery, inspection and adjustment of the carburetors, timing and dwell check, front suspension lubrication, brake inspection, reinstallation of loose left-rear brake backing plate bolts, and replacement of shift rod center and ball-cup bushings to address vibration at the shift lever. Together, these records reflect consistent attention to drivability and reliability under the current owner’s care.

Mechanically powered by the matching 1600cc flat-four engine (Type 616/15) producing 75 horsepower and paired with the matching 4-speed manual transmission (Type 741) and four-wheel disc braking system. This 356C delivers the refined, engaging driving experience associated with the final generation of the 356. Complete with its original purchase contract, owner’s manual, Porsche technical specification booklet, Porsche 356 restoration guide book, spare wheel, tool kit, jack, and complete service history from new. This 1965 Porsche 356C Coupe offers a rare opportunity to acquire a very original, low-mileage California black-plate example with a known ownership history, excellent documentation, and is in excellent mechanical condition.
