The vehicle in detail

Chassis No. 304010

Engine No. 907203

Transmission No. 1280313 (See text)

Delivered through Porsche MAHAG in Munich, Germany, in April 1966, the Kardex warranty for this U.S.-market 1966 Porsche 911 reveals it was a Tourist Delivery example ordered by Roy O’Brian of Arlington, Virginia. The Light Ivory coupé was optioned with Catacolor tinted glass all around, a Webasto heater, radio suppression, bumper guards with rubber trim, and a travel kit. The Black upholstered interior was optioned with front shoulder belts and desirable Pepita fabric seat inserts.

The 911 likely returned to the U.S. with O’Brian later that year and according to a previous U.S. title, this early 911 coupé was located in Florida as early as 1984. Research indicates it had been stored from the late 1980s until 2007 when it was advertised for sale with 86,000 original miles, fitted with Weber carburetors, and given a recent service. Interestingly, the car was fitted with a sunroof at the time, yet this is not noted on the Kardex warranty card.

By October 2007 the rare Light Ivory 911 had returned to Europe, where it was imported into Switzerland and issued a Porsche Certificate through AMAG confirming that after 42 years the 911 retained its matching numbers 2.0-liter flat-six engine. Service and restoration invoices on file reveal a substantial investment first at S/F Classic Cars, Garage Furer Classic Cars, and Ruckstuhl Classic Cars, the last of which is in Adliswil, just outside Zürich.

The work has been all-encompassing with engine and transmission (a Type 902/2 five-speed sourced from a 912) rebuilds in 2017 at Ruckstuhl Classic Cars invoiced at CHF 44’000. The engine was completely disassembled down to the crankshaft, with work performed on the case and heads, the cylinders honed, and new seals and gaskets fitted upon reassembly. While the mechanical work was done, the electrics were attended to and various parts were rechromed, including the bumper horns. Additional cosmetic work was completed, and a full accounting of the restoration and servicing is available online for review.

With its matching-numbers engine, original colors, and documented mechanical and cosmetic work, this early short-wheelbase 911 offers an appealing blend of period-correct specification and considered restoration, ready to be enjoyed on the road.
