In 1979, Porsche had made plans to replace the 911 with their new 928 company flagship. Sales of the 911 remained so strong, however, that Porsche revised its strategy and decided to inject new life into the 911 editions.
Peter W. Schutz (CEO Porsche AG 1981–1987) wrote:
The decision to keep the 911 in the product line occurred one afternoon in the office of Dr. Helmuth Bott, the Porsche operating board member responsible for all engineering and development. I noticed a chart on the wall of Professor Bott’s office. It depicted the ongoing development schedules for the three primary Porsche product lines: 944, 928 and 911. Two of them stretched far into the future, but the 911 program stopped at the end of 1981. I remember rising from my chair, walking over to the chart, taking a black marker pen, and extending the 911 program bar clean off the chart. I am sure I heard a silent cheer from Professor Bott, and I knew I had done the right thing. The Porsche 911, the company icon, had been saved, and I believe the company was saved with it.

Our car on offer is a wonderful original car that has been under current ownership for over 40 years! This highly original 1978 SC Coupe has been finished in timeless black over black leather with a black headliner. The black exterior and the polished Fuchs wheels give the car that classic look everybody loves in those early cars. No wing distracts from the beautiful lines.
This SC has been enthusiastically owned by a loyal PCA member and it shows. The documentation of the car goes back over 4 decades and proves careful and responsible ownership in two full folders.
The car runs and drives simply amazing with the right sounds and smells and the direct analog feedback many fans miss in the modern examples. The 3.0l power plant is surprisingly strong and torquey and begs to be driven.
The body is laser straight with perfect gaps and shut lines and carries still about 50% of it’s original paint. No sun fade or spider webbing noticeably. The paint still looks absolutely amazing! All glass is good.
The black interior shows very nice with a perfect, crack free dash and all instruments in perfect working order. The black leather seats show some expected light patina, but are still very good with no cracks and firm upholstery. Door panels and headliner are very nice. The original floor mats and the carpet under the pedals on the driver side are tired, that is about the only flaw in the interior and an easy fix.
The engine had a documented top end rebuild in 1992 at 78900 miles. Current mileage is 108750 so they are only about 30k miles on the motor. The transmission is shifting up and down precise without any synchro noises or other noticeable issues. You can tell, this car was always serviced.
The SC model has lately evolved to a real sweet spot for enthusiasts, combining classic 911 looks and a very analog-no electronics driving experience with the legendary reliability of the 3.0l flat six power plant. These early cars are free of any electronic motor management.
This Porsche 911 is a highly original and unmolested car from long term California ownership. No rust, no accidents and no issues. The Claifornia smog test was just passed with flying colors. The car comes with complete service documents of over 40 years, a spare emergency wheel, jack and toolkit.
