In 1994, Porsche announced the 993. Produced for only a few years, the 993 proved to be the last of the air-cooled Porsches with increased performance, improved handling, and greater luxury than ever before. The first 911 with a multi-link rear suspension, the 993 was available in coupe, cabriolet, and Targa (now with a power-retracting glass panel rather than the previous removable top insert) and with a choice of rear or all wheel drive. A new six-speed manual or optional Tiptronic automatic transmission further allowed buyers to choose the best car for their needs.

Also for the first time, Porsche offered a factory “power kit” for the Carrera models. Dubbed the “X51 Power Kit” (much as the Turbo with its “X50 Power Kit”), the package included upgraded cams, rocker arms, and exhaust components at a cost of over $11,000. With output increasing from 282hp to approximately 320hp, examples so equipped offered buyers performance that neatly split the difference between a period Turbo and the standard Carrera.
