1996 Porsch 993 Carrera Targa

The last of its kind

In the world of sports cars, there are legends - cars that shine not only through performance, but also through style, character and history. One of these milestones is the Porsche 993 Targa, a vehicle that is regarded as a bridge between classic engineering and modern innovation. It was not only the last Porsche 911 with an air-cooled boxer engine - it was also a technical and aesthetic masterpiece with a very special roof construction.

When the Porsche 993 was introduced in 1993, it was more than just a further development - it was a decisive step into the future of the 911 model series. The 993 model series was the fourth generation of the Porsche 911, and is still considered one of the most sophisticated and beautiful versions today. But the Targa, which only came onto the market in 1995, was something very special.

The vehicle in detail

Earlier Targa models were known for their distinctive, removable roof panel and the characteristic roll bar - a tribute to Porsche's response to increasingly strict safety regulations in the USA in the 1960s. But everything changed with the 993: for the first time, the Targa no longer had a removable roof, but instead a large, electrically operated glass roof that could be slid continuously backwards under the rear window.

This was a revolution - a mixture of coupé, convertible and something completely new. The elegant, frameless solution made the 993 Targa the perfect car for drivers who wanted to enjoy fresh air without sacrificing the rigid body structure of a coupé.

Under the hood was an air-cooled 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with up to 286 hp (in the model with Varioram from 1996). The sound - raw, honest, direct - was music to the senses. The newly developed multi-link rear axle ensured significantly better driving stability and comfort compared to earlier 911 models.

And then there was the design: rounded, but not soft. Classic, but not old-fashioned. Today, the 993 is one of the most sought-after 911s of all - not least because it is considered to be particularly reliable and durable.

production of the Porsche 993 ended in 1998 - and with it the era of the air-cooled 911. For many enthusiasts, the 993 Targa marked the high point of this line: technically mature, visually timeless, and with a roof solution that was ahead of its time.

Its successor, the 996 Targa, continued the glass roof concept, but with water cooling, a new design and a completely different driving experience.

Today, the 993 Targa is a sought-after classic, not only because of its limited production run (only around 4,600 units worldwide), but also because it is a symbol of a time when craftsmanship, engineering and driving pleasure were in perfect balance.

It is the ideal car for purists who appreciate the analog - and for aesthetes who love the flowing lines and the sophisticated roof concept. In a world full of technology overkill and digital driving assistants, the 993 Targa is a piece of lived freedom - with six cylinders, air cooling and a clear connection between man and machine.

The Targa presented here was first delivered and driven in the USA before coming to Germany in 2012. The owners were so happy with it that they had never let this car out of their hands.

Now, however, a new lover is to be found.

What cannot be denied is that, with a total mileage of 215,000 km, it has had an eventful life. The many minor paint damages also speak for this. But if you don't find this annoying, you can drive it with its blemishes - of course you could always make it prettier...😉
