Rather than focusing solely on lap times, the 997 GT3 invites you to enjoy an exceptionally rewarding and analogue interaction between man and machine, whether on a winding country road or at your favourite circuit. On start-up, the Mezger engine sounds rather like a tin can filled with nuts and nails. But as the rev counter approaches the redline, it becomes almost impossible to suppress a childlike grin.
The pedestal on which Hans Mezger now stands is almost absurdly high, but designing engines was something he truly mastered. Taking the needle towards 9,000 rpm in the modern 9A1/9A2 engines is an exhilarating experience, but wringing out a Mezger feels almost religious. That is how good these engines are.
This Swedish-delivered example has had just two custodians from new, although the first owned the car for less than ten months. Its equipment is deliberately sparse and performance-oriented, featuring the 90-litre fuel tank, leatherette trim and the Clubsport package.
As most enthusiasts will know, the engine grew from 3.6 to 3.8 litres through enlarged cylinder bores, while the stroke remained unchanged. The result is a meatier mid-range, with noticeably more punch when the throttle is fully opened. Output rises to an impressive 435 hp and 430 Nm, compared with the earlier engine’s 415 hp and 405 Nm. The maximum engine speed also increased slightly, from 8,400 to 8,500 rpm. In my humble opinion, the 997.2 GT3 takes us yet another step closer to driving nirvana.
