  • Substantial amount of service history!
  • Extensive maintenance and refurbishing work
  • Remarkable condition!

In 1981, the 911 was famously saved by Peter Schutz, the then-new CEO of Porsche. The front-engined V8-powered 928, which had begun production in 1977, was supposed to replace the 911, which was accordingly being run out during this period. The 911 received no meaningful changes because its production was due to end shortly, making the 1978 to 1983 period the longest in the 911’s production run without any substantive updates. However, Schutz understood that Porsche customers deeply valued the immense character of the 911, and implemented a fundamental shift in Porsche’s direction by deciding to continue to develop and produce the 911 indefinitely.

Thus, he is credited with “saving” the 911 and the 1984 arrival of the 3.2 liter Carrera, the replacement of the 3.0 liter SC, was the direct result of the decision to keep investing in the 911. The Carrera 3.2 brought overdue upgrades, the most notable of which was an enlarged engine with, for the first time in a 911, electronic fuel injection via Bosch’s Motronic system.

These Carrera 3.2s represent a sweet spot in the 911’s evolution, possessing modern, emissions-friendly engine management, but no other computers. Without ABS or power steering, they have an old-school feel that is a revelation to today’s enthusiasts, yet the galvanized chassis and fuel injection give the car a durability and usability that make them ideal classics.

This particular car is a superbly maintained and enthusiastically owned example which was sold new on the 2nd of January 1985 in Reno, Nevada. Finished in Prussian blue with cashmere leather sport seats, it is a very handsome configuration. The car came to California in 1992 and has remained here since. It has had two owners in the last 25 years, the latter of which has owned the car for eight years, during which time the car has covered about 9,000 miles. During that time, the car has been regularly serviced, with many minor fixes performed to keep the car in top condition, plus routine service including a valve adjustment less than 2,000 miles ago.

The interior was retrimmed at a cost of $10,700 under current ownership, which included replacing the dashboard and trimming it and the door caps in dark blue. Prior to the current owner’s purchase, the engine was rebuilt by Ignacio Motorsports at 194,000 miles in 2004. This work included new pistons and cylinders, new valves, new bearings, new timing chains, and much more. A factory short shift kit from a 1986 Carrera 3.2 and a Steve Wong chip have also been installed.

The car’s condition today is remarkable; it presents like a car with far fewer than the indicated miles, a testament to the extensive maintenance and refurbishing work it has received. Included with the car is a substantial amount of service history, original books set including stamped service book, and partial tool roll.
