Is there a more legendary car than the 911? Introduced in 1963, the replacement for the Porsche 356 was an immediate success. The car’s design was unique, its styling immediately recognizable and its build quality above many standards. The recipe never changed, and the 911 enjoyed an exceptionally long career, still in production today! Initially identified internally as project 901, it was eventually marketed as 911 to avoid any legal problems with Peugeot. The overall architecture of the 356 with its rear overhang engine was retained, but the engine was now a 2-liter flat-six. In response to the popularity of the 911, Porsche expanded its range with several variants. The first was the Sport or S version, with 160 hp. Then came the T for Touring, a less expensive version equipped with a deflated 110 hp engine. These two versions were backed up by the 130-hp 911, which became the Luxus, or L. In 1968, it received Bosch mechanical fuel injection and was renamed 911 E, for «Einspritz», or injection in Goethe’s language. Displacement was increased from 2 liters to 2.2 liters in 1969, resulting in an increase in power to 125 hp for the 911 T, 155 hp for the 911 E and 180 hp for the 911 S. In practice, the T and E versions are quite similar, and the increase in displacement to 2.2L in 1969 mainly benefits the T version. Smoother at low revs and with improved torque, its engine, fed by two carburetors of proven efficiency, offered unbeatable performance/price ratios. In 1972, with a further increase in displacement to 2341 cm3, the 911 took another step forward, benefiting the three T, E and S versions. These different versions of the 911, more or less well equipped, are all available with the Targa bodywork that is inseparable from the Porsche brand.
The Porsche 911 presented here is a T version with a 2.2L displacement (type 911/03 engine), renowned for its lightness and robust, efficient twin-barrel Zenith carburetors, in its iconic Targa version. It also features an optional 5-speed gearbox (type 911/01). According to the accompanying Porsche factory description, this model was also delivered with the option of Fuchs wheels and 15 mm stabilizer bars.
This is a 1971 C-series car, delivered to its first owner on November 30, 1970 in Italy, and one of only 3,476 911 T Targas produced worldwide that year. After spending most of its life in sunny Italy, the car moved to Belgium, where it was first registered in 2003 but did not run much, before finally being imported to France in 2016, where it was stored for several years by its last owner.
In 2024, he decided to get the car back on the road and had a number of repairs carried out, including a general overhaul with replacement of the spark plugs, cleaning of the carburetors, adjustment of the valve clearances, brake overhaul, replacement of the alternator, clutch, shock absorbers, and tires, as well as repair of the odometer and refurbishment of the targa roof lining. Bodywork was also carried out, with replacement of part of the floor panels and wheel arches, in addition to repainting the entire front compartment. Originally light ivory in color, this 911 was repainted in an elegant light gray many years ago, which blends beautifully with the gold lettering unique to this series, while a more aerodynamic 2.7L RS-style spoiler was installed for this occasion. The black imitation leather and corduroy upholstery has been replaced by an interior entirely in black imitation leather. However, as a sign of the special care taken with this vehicle, this 911 has retained both its original engine and gearbox. What’s more, it has only covered around 114,000 km, as its 5-digit odometer shows just 13,850 km.
The 911 is undoubtedly one of those cars that have marked the history of the automobile, and our example, which has covered just under 2,000 km since being restored to working order and is in beautiful condition and working order, is therefore an excellent opportunity to acquire a first-generation model, especially in its convertible body, at a reasonable price. It also represents a sound investment: first-generation 911s are cars whose value will not depreciate as reliable and high-performance classics.
