This stunning example was sold via Kahmann and Schumacher of Düsseldorf to a Mr Don Plant, an American soldier based in West Germany, in February 1955. It is one of only 1,034 ‘Pre-A’ Speedsters made in 1955 and was delivered in 602 Reutter Blue with beige interior, featuring a 1,488 cc air-cooled Type 546/2 pushrod engine mated to a four-speed gearbox. The records that accompany the car show that Mr Plant enjoyed owning it for 22 years and that he took it home with him to Massachusetts when he left Germany, before parting ways with the car in 1979. It then passed into the hands of a Mr Stewart D Reed of Holland, Missouri, who in turn owned the car for a further 30 years, selling it to its current owner in 2009. Since then the car has undergone substantial restoration by Phillipe Rochart in Pully, Switzerland, whilst the engine rebuild was entrusted to renowned Swiss specialist Marc de Siebenthal in Aclens.
