The vehicle in detail

THE SC

The 356 made its final transformation with the Type 6 body in 1963. Designated 356C, it had a new ZF steering gear and added compensating springs at the rear, the latter calming the swing axle suspension. The SC was fitted with a Type 616/16 air-cooled 1,582-cubic-centimeter four-cylinder engine with dual carburetors rated at 95 horsepower. The SC Cabriolet was Porsche’s almost top-of-the-line product, overshadowed only by the exotic Carrera 2; from a usability standpoint, the SC provided nearly all the thrills, with far less mechanical complexity. The transmission was a fully synchronized four-speed-plus-reverse manual unit, Type 741/2C. Disc brakes were fitted all around. Top speed of the SC was well in excess of 110 mph.

This 356SC

Completed at Porsche’s Zuffenhausen Works for the 1963 model year, this desirable 356 SC Cabriolet, represents one of the early examples of the final and most developed evolution of the 356 series. Finished in elegant Reiher Grau, a subtle light grey tone that shifts beautifully with changing light, the Cabriolet is complemented by a striking red leatherette interior. According to its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the car was delivered new to the German market to an American soldier at Hahn Air Base.

Assumed is that he took the car back home as it spent a period in the United States before returning to Europe. In 2006 it was acquired by its most recent Belgian owner, in whose long-term stewardship it has remained ever since, benefiting from attentive care and sympathetic maintenance. Although the original engine was replaced by a period-appropriate 356 SC earlier in its life, the proper character, specification, and driving experience expected of Porsche’s flagship pushrod model is preserved.

A significant mechanical refurbishment was undertaken in 2012, including conversion from 6-volt to 12-volt electrics, clutch replacement, a engine rebuild, Weber carburettor overhaul, and renewal of the braking system, including the master cylinder. Around this time, the car was professionally refinished by a Porsche Centre, restoring depth and lustre to the bodywork.

Recent maintenance includes a new alternator, high-torque starter motor, electric fuel pump, and new tyres, ensuring the car remains ready for immediate enjoyment.

Today, this SC Cabriolet presents attractively throughout, with a bright paint finish, good panel fit, and a pleasing patina to the red interior, while the black convertible top is complemented by a matching convertible top cover. The original chrome wheels are shod with Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. A wood-rimmed steering wheel adds period sporting character.

The car is accompanied by a substantial history file documenting its life from the early 1990s to the present and its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity & KARDEX.

As the ultimate development of the 356 lineage, the SC Cabriolet remains one of the most coveted open Porsche models of the pre-911 era. With strong demand, limited production, and enduring enthusiast appeal, well-maintained examples continue to demonstrate excellent long-term collectability. Combining desirable specification, documented history, and an authentic driving character, this example represents a compelling opportunity for the collector seeking both enjoyment and investment potential.
