With chassis number 124, it is a very early example of the originally planned 500 vehicles. Due to high demand, our research indicates that the final production run consisted of 1,930 base RS models.
Based on the 964 Carrera Cup race car and continuing the lineage of the legendary 2.7, 3.0 RS, and RSR models, the 964 Carrera RS features a revised version of the standard engine and, for the first time since the early 1970s, embodied the manufacturer’s pure and uncompromising sports car philosophy—the RS!
All in all, more intense, unfiltered, and impressive than the standard 964s, its output was increased to 260 hp. Combined with a lightweight flywheel mated to the G50/10 transmission with closer gear ratios, an asymmetrical limited-slip differential, and steel synchros, the Carrera RS delivers an unparalleled driving experience—even today. In this stripped-down version, with minimal concessions to road-legal requirements (a windshield washer fluid reservoir must be present, hence it holds only 1 liter), no vehicle like this would likely be produced today. Additionally, a track-oriented suspension system with a 40 mm lower ride height, stiffer springs, shock absorbers, and adjustable stabilizers—without power steering—was installed.
Accordingly, the interior—including the Recaro sports bucket seats—also guarantees the racer’s austere character. As soon as you take your seat, the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end and all your senses focus on the essential sensation: pure racing excitement. The center console stands out with its short gearshift lever and the backlit instruments using backlighting technology, where symbols and text only appear when necessary to inform the driver. Nothing should disrupt the concentration and focus on the essentials, on the car’s true purpose, on driving, and the resulting pleasure.
The trunk lid is made of aluminum, and the chassis is seam-welded. The wheels of the 964 Carrera RS are made of magnesium, and the glass in the doors and rear window is thinner. The Carrera RS is thus approximately 130 kg lighter than the Carrera 2 model.
