This is the sound people buy annual tickets for. And to think that you can simply conduct that symphony yourself with the manual G6400 container. No flippers, no double clutch that thinks it knows better than you. Just you, your left foot and a poker.
All right, back to the car in question. The 964 offered here is from 1993, executed in Indischrot, and that is exactly the colour in which a 911 from this period belongs. Not yet another black or silver one you encounter three times at every Porsche meeting, but a deep, popping red that captures the round shapes of the 964 in just the right way.
Inside you will find leather, four seats (the rear two of which, as always with a 911, are especially suitable for shopping bags or children that you don’t like very much) and that wonderfully direct feeling of a car from a time when ‘connectivity’ still struck the connection between your hands and the road.
And then the history, because it is beautiful. This 964 was delivered in Italy in July 1993 by Porsche Italia in Padova, and spent most of his life there. The maintenance booklet reads like a diary: first turn in June 1993 at Porsche Italia, annuals neatly stamped, original Porsche brake fluid, up to and including the condition inspection for the long-term warranty.
Sometime around 2013, the car crossed the Alps to Germany, where it rolled through the inspection again and again at TÜV Rheinland and DEKRA, and specialized Porsche addresses such as GT Classic Sportwagen in Essen took care of it. A car with a paper trail that many 964 can only dream of.
What makes this 964 so attractive is that combination of honesty and maturity. This is not a trailer queen who is only allowed to leave the garage in dry weather. This is a 911 as Porsche intended it: a car that you take on a fresh Sunday morning, with which you stroll the coastal road along Katwijk or continue to the Eifel, and that you reluctantly put away at the end of the day.
The 964 is not the fastest, not the rarest and not the most expensive 911 there is. But it is perhaps the most complete classic 911 that you dare to use every day. And that, dear enthusiast, is exactly what it’s all about.
Granted, by today’s yards, 250 horsepower is not a number you’ll shut down a sports car forum with. But anyone who has ever sent an air-cooled 911 with their own hands through a curve knows that horsepower is not the point at all. It is about the feeling, the immediacy, the sound and that irreplaceable bond between man and machine. The 964 gives you all that, and adds a grin that colors the rest of your week.
This red one is ready. The only question is who’s getting in now and making it.
The last classic lined that you still dare to drive, in the most beautiful color that exists for it.
