Fast forward to 2001 and I’m in another 356 meeting a group from 356 CAR at the old Sam’s Town on Hiway 50 for a wine tour in the foothills. Arriving early, I was approached by a fellow in 930 who informed me that he had a car like mine for sale locally and hadn’t had any interest. I made arrangements to stop by his place following the tour and in a perfect bit of serendipity, it turned out to be my friend’s old car. Bought it on the spot and have since built the matching #s engine which is stored on a pedestal and built another for use in the car.
Having decided that this was going to be my long term tub, I decided to build her to my wishes and did.
Now Leaf Green, a 911, 912 color, with tan interior, fawn piping, dash, and firewall cover with Oatmeal square weave carpeting. Steering wheel is from one of 500 Jensen CV8’s built in the early 60’s since I am a Jensen and the wheel provides a better view of the instrumentation. All gauges by Hollywood Speedo including a 904 multi gauge.
Joe Leoni headlight and starter relays, a silicone fluid dual brake system, flashing LED third brake light, headlights and all other lights coverted to LED, cast aluminum EMPI wheels, slightly lowered front and back, Optima battery, sisal mats, handmade olive wood mushroom shift knob, OG shift knob, many vintage German event badges from the period, a Tour D Europe plaque from a 356 Carrera 2 that participated most of the Euro rallies of 1963, photo of car damaged at the Monte Carlo rally that year shown. 3 point retractable seat belts and correct B armrests. OG wire mesh headlight covers, C window washers, OG 356 enamel Reutter badge, Euro turn signals and rear reflectors.
Engine currently in car is a late reinforced B case with one under B crank, 912 rods, NPR big bore kit, cam ground to specs by Dema Elgin, 200 MM flywheel, clutch, 911 TO bearing, Normal heads and valve train with new guides, valves and springs, S Zeniths, sport exhaust with SS square resonator tips, Zims aluminum oil cooler, Precision Matters full flow oil filter, Zims aluminum degreed pulley, 050 distributor. All machine work by Jay Robinson. Balanced and CC’d. Less than 4 K on the clock.
Matching #s engine rebuilt with B crank and rods, S heads with new valves, guides, springs and retainers. Elgin cam, AA Performance big bore kit, powder coated sheet metal, S Zeniths, all balanced, with lightened 200 MM flywheel and clutch by Ted Blake restorations. Machine work by Jay Robinson. 0 miles.
Car was first shown following it’s redux as a non judged car at the 2005 Niello Concours Serrano. Next shown at the 2008 356 Registry West Coast Holiday at Squaw Valley, placing 3rd in B closed. Shown in 2009 Topline Porsche Concours taking another 3rd and finally shown at the 2021 Monterey Werkes Reunion as one of 8 cars in the judged 356 class, Shown at the first ‘ Drive to Eden ‘, James Dean Tribute show at the Coppola Winery in Sonoma County, Lew Bracker, Dean’s best friend and Porsche race car drive was honored guest and judge. Car was awarded the best of the Foreign Cars. Shown at Luftgekult 9 at Mare Isand in Vallejo, California and then featured in their book covering that event. Then shown at the 2023 Niello Concours at Serrano taking a third in class
2023 – 2025 car was modified again with new tan headliner from Autos International, new GT style seats with Fawn vinyl, Tan piping and Porsche Karo Madras Brown and Orange cloth inserts.. Handmade gunmetal colored moons with 356 C logos. Car was awarded the Porschettes, ladies judges award for favorite car of show and Haggerty’s favorite car of the show at the PCA Zone 7 Concours at the newly opened, Sacramento Porsche Dealership. She was then shown at the 69th Hillsborough Concours, the longest running Concours in the World. Following that her original seats were redone by Autos International and Blueline Interiors of Petaluma, Cal. in Fawn, Tan, a special Leather for the bolsters and Green piping, her wheels replaced by body color smoothies with moons and beauty rings and was then shown at the Ironstone Concours, taking an award of merit. Last showing was the Niello Concours at Serrano where she placed first in her class.
All items shown in the attached photos with the exception of the books and calendars are included in the sale including a new deluxe horn ring, button and cuff not shown as well as
a number of other spares and related parts.
