The vehicle in detail

1 of 1 Porsche factory Rally car built in Werk 1 Zuffenhausen in 1979 on a 1972 chassis so it could be road legal/emissions exempt with its factory RSR 3.0L engine type 911/77. Build was overseen by Gerd Schmid director of the customer racing department, it was a rare time where Porsche was still a small company and you could ask them to build anything you wanted. Privateer Bruno Kreibich wanted a factory built rally car to compete in North American rally events, similar to the East African Safari car built in the early 70s but with more power. This car cost over $110k to build in ’79 plus the donor car, Gerd said that it was so expensive and time consuming to do a one off car like this that they would never build another. Later an employee of the racing department built the Heigo rally car and Porsche built the 21 911SCRS cars using the same formula that was first used on this car.

The USA designated 72 chassis was stripped to a bare shell and fully reworked to this configuration, body stiffened, all interior/undercoat/sound padding removed, full steel roll cage, steel RSR flares over Fuchs 15×7,8 wheels, Lightweight plastic windows, gutted doors, alloy ducktail decklid, RSR brakes covered by rock shields, dual master pedal assy with balance bar, custom cutting brake, all business rally purpose trunk housing a relocated oil system & 110L RSR fuel tank, duel front fender mounted oil coolers, 935 lollipop seats with 4pt harnesses, 930 trailing arms, RSR spring plate covers, full length skid plate & large mudflaps. Included is a 12 page factory build receipt.

Unrestored and in as raced fantastic condition – no wrecks or major damage. Ran for 3 seasons – at least 21 professional races, against other well known drivers such as John Buffum & Rod Millen. Bruno became an Audi factory driver on the Quattros in 84. The Safari RSR was retired from racing and went into a private collection for the last 40 years. This car is currently road registered and clean titled in California – if we can register this car here for road use then it can most likely be registered anywhere. Perfect car to take to a road rally where you want something competitive but also something no one else has.

We are in current contact with Gerd Schmid who directed the build at Porsche, Gerd was a prominent figure in Porsche factory racing, after this build relocating to the Weissach facility and was in charge of Porsche 956C, Porsche 962C, GT2R, GT1 customer race cars and he was the creator of all Porsche Cup races worldwide. “It was amazing to have Porsche build a 1972 car in 1978. It was a special job, you know, but nobody in the world would pay such a lot of money for such a historic car to be built up in a rally car.” “Today, Porsche cannot do this. It does not have such a facility anymore. There is no workshop like we had in those days. Porsche have not built, again, such a car for any customer in the world. The transformation of this car was so expensive. Nobody wants to pay for such a big build. It is, if you want, a rally prototype. It is a unique car – the only one in the world. Porsche just built one, you know, and not more. This is not a production car, it’s a hand-made Porsche race car or rally car. It’s the one. Such a car can be very, very expensive. It is very special” – Gerd Schmid January 14, 2022.

Publications on this car have been published in Randy Leffingwell’s book “Porsche 911, 60 Years”, Esses magazine “When Bruno Went Rallying”, and 000 Magazine article under development now due to be published late 2026.
