The 944 Turbo entered production in 1985 for the 1986 model year and significantly improved the performance of the base 944. The new turbocharged engine produced 220 horsepower and about 329 Nm of torque, which was a substantial increase compared to the naturally aspirated base 944. This resulted in roughly a two-second improvement in 0–100 km/h acceleration.
Boosting performance required significant engineering work: the 944 was the first mass-produced Porsche to use a ceramic port liner, and also the first whose power output remained the same regardless of whether a catalytic converter was installed or not. The engine featured an oil cooler, and the transmission was also upgraded. It had different gear ratios and was reinforced to handle the increased power. The suspension received progressive springs and was slightly stiffened. The brakes were also upgraded: the car used the same 12-inch discs as the 911, equipped with Brembo four-piston fixed calipers. The brakes were housed inside 16-inch wheels, with Fuchs wheels available as an option.
The fast four-cylinder engine, based on water-cooled turbo technology, received widespread praise and also achieved several successes in motorsport. Experts hailed it as the fastest catalyzed car in the world and one of the cleanest, while others summed it up as Porsche’s high technology at its very best. The 944 Turbo was visually distinguished from the base model by an aerodynamically optimized front end, black side skirts, and a body-colored rear diffuser.
In 1988, a new, more powerful model called the Porsche 944 Turbo S was introduced, offering improved performance at 250 PS thanks to the larger K26/8 turbocharger made by KKK, as well as improved drivability with a limited-slip differential. From 1989 onwards, all 944 Turbo models were fitted with the more powerful 250 PS engine, of which this example is one.
This car is in collectible condition, and everything except the radio is original. It comes with a complete service history, owner’s manuals, the original spare wheel, a tire inflation compressor, and a tool kit.
The car was delivered new on July 29, 1989, by the official Porsche retailer at the time, Sports Car Center in Helsinki, Finland. The car has remained in Finland ever since and has been very meticulously cared for. It has had only two owners in the last 26 years.
The Guards Red exterior pairs fantastically with the black interior. The M030 sports suspension enhances the driving experience; combined with the car’s 50/50 weight distribution, it is widely considered one of the best-handling cars of its era. The large removable sunroof gives the car a targa-like experience on warm summer days.
Mechanically, this car is very sound. It comes with a Finnish historic vehicle MOT and has just been inspected without any remarks. The MOT is valid until March 20, 2030.
At 103,520 km in 1999, the car underwent a major overhaul, including new connecting rod bearings, crankshaft restoration, cylinder head machining, new piston rings, new gaskets, and a new clutch, among others.
At 170,320 km in 2017, the car received a new turbo fitted by Porsche Center Helsinki. The car has also undergone extensive maintenance work in recent years, thanks to which it is in very good technical condition. This includes, among other things, new spark plugs, upper engine gaskets, refurbishment of the power steering pump, and a new water pump.
Last year, the timing belt, balance shaft belt, power steering belt, and alternator belt were all replaced. The oil has been changed annually in recent years. Service intervals have been followed according to the recommended schedule throughout the car’s history without any gaps.
A small visible detail on the car is that it is fitted with a US-spec rear bumper, which were in some cases installed due to local regulations, even though the car was otherwise delivered in ROW specification.
