And then consider that you get to conduct this symphony yourself, with the G6400 manual transmission. No paddle shifters, no dual-clutch system that thinks it knows better than you do. Just you, your left foot, and a shift lever.
Well, back to the car in question. The 964 offered here is from 1993, painted in Guards Red—and that’s exactly the color a 911 from this era belongs in. Not the umpteenth black or silver model you see three times at every Porsche meet, but a deep, vibrant red that captures the 964’s rounded shapes just right. Inside, you’ll find leather, four seats (the rear two of which, as is always the case with a 911, are best suited for shopping bags or kids you don’t particularly like), and that wonderfully direct feel of a car from a time when “connectivity” still meant the connection between your hands and the road.
And then there’s the history—because it’s beautiful. This 964 was delivered new in July 1993 in Italy by Porsche Italia in Padua and spent most of its life there. The service booklet reads like a diary: first inspection in June 1993 at Porsche Italia, annual inspections neatly stamped, original Porsche brake fluid, right down to the condition inspection for the extended warranty. Sometime around 2013, the car crossed the Alps into Germany, where it repeatedly passed inspections at TÜV Rheinland and DEKRA, and was cared for by specialized Porsche shops such as GT Classic Sportwagen in Essen. A car with a paper trail that many a 964 can only dream of.
What makes this 964 so appealing is that combination of authenticity and maturity. This is no “trailer queen” that’s only allowed out of the garage in dry weather. This is a 911 just as Porsche intended it: a car you grab on a crisp Sunday morning, drive along the coastal road on Sylt or head further into the Eifel, and are only reluctant to park again at the end of the day. The 964 isn’t the fastest, rarest, or most expensive 911 out there. But it’s perhaps the most complete classic 911 you’d still dare to drive every day. And that, dear enthusiast, is exactly what it’s all about.
Admittedly, by today’s standards, 250 PS isn’t a number that’s going to set a sports car forum ablaze. But anyone who’s ever steered an air-cooled 911 through a curve with their own hands knows that horsepower isn’t what matters at all. It’s about the feeling, the responsiveness, the sound, and that irreplaceable connection between man and machine. The 964 gives you all of that and throws in a smile as standard—one that will brighten the rest of your week.
This red one is ready. The only question is, who’s going to get behind the wheel and prove they deserve it?
The last one with classic lines that you’ll still dare to drive, in the most beautiful color available for it.
