Ending production of their first-generation 356 Speedster in 1959, Porsche would leave the Speedster badge dormant for nearly 30 years until 1989, upon release of the one-year-only 911 Carrera-based Speedster. Essentially a “chopped” version of the marque’s contemporary Carrera cabriolet, the second-generation Speedster featured a shortened and raked front windshield, manual cloth ‘emergency’ soft top, and ‘double-bubble’ tonneau shell behind the seats. The Carrera cabriolet-sourced the single overhead cam, air-cooled 3.2-liter, flat-six engine which was paired with a standard G50 five-speed transaxle providing 231 horsepower and 190 lb. ft. of torque.
The greatly improved third generation Type 964 Speedster was released in late 1992. The larger 3.6-liter, air-cooled M64 SOHC, flat-six engine delivers an improved 247 horsepower and 280-pound feet of torque, propelling the 3,527-pound convertible to 60-mph in just 5.5-seconds. A G50 five-speed transaxle transmission routes power the rear wheels aided by a revised onboard computer, 17-inch staggered alloy wheels, and optional limited-slip differential. The 964 platform not only provided the third generation Speedster with improved performance and sharper aesthetics, but also improved handling and driving dynamics. Sizable four-piston calipers and cross-ventilated rotors at each corner underpin a multilink independent suspension featuring MacPherson struts up front and semi-trailing arms at the convertible’s more bulbous rear track. The 964 Speedster served within the Porsche lineup as a desirable bridge between the comfortable Carrera S2 cabriolet and track-focused Carrera RS.
The 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster offered here is a well-documented, and tastefully optioned ‘narrow-body’ example presenting with 21,025 miles since new. The Grand Prix White exterior and optional color-matched, staggered 17-inch Cup wheels contrast brightly against the handsome black leather interior. Fewer than a thousand 964 Speedsters were constructed, with 469 examples earmarked for North American distribution. This chassis has been meticulously maintained—the original 3.6-liter motor and five-speed manual gearbox are both present and unmodified. Additional factory options on this Speedster include a limited-slip differential, air conditioning, and the leather “Carrera 3” sport bucket seats. This lot is offered with its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, a copy of the original Bill of Sale, owner’s manual, warranty guides, service records, prior registrations, and a clean CARFAX report.
With its impressive performance, dashing good looks, exclusivity, and documented ownership history, there is no substitute to this 1994 Porsche 911 Speedster.
