The first Porsche 911 GT2 arrived with the 993-generation and represented the pinnacle of air-cooled 911 performance. A racer in all but name, the homologation special was a brute of a machine designed for the track and to deliver the Stuttgart firm honours in the GT2 class. With Porsche’s attention turning to the GT3 class in the new millennium, its successor, the 996-generation GT2, was an altogether more usable—but by no means less fearsome—road-focussed machine.
It may have been more refined than its predecessor, but the 996 GT2 boasted true supercar performance thanks to a twin-turbocharged 3.6-litre water-cooled flat-six engine borrowed from the 911 Turbo. Tuned to extract a further 10 per cent more power, the GT2 could summon a colossal 462 horsepower, which was directed to the rear wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. Performance was staggering, with a top speed in excess of 318 km/h and a 0 to 100 km/h sprint time of around four seconds. The GT2 looked the part, too, thanks to a more aggressively styled front end, flared wheel arches, and a huge fixed rear wing.
Finished in black over a black leather interior and specified with two-way sports seats and a Becker CD-radio, chassis 695106 was first delivered on 15 June 2001 via Porsche Brussels. An accompanying service book includes four stamps, the first on 30 January 2003, followed by a service at AMAG Centre Porsche Lausanne on 10 December 2004. Atra Automobiles in Geneva tended to the car on 4 October 2006, with the most recent big service carried out by Porsche Geneva on 9 April 2015; records indicate that the brake fluid was changed in 2004 and 2015. Joining The Carrera Collection in 2016, the car is believed to have had just one previous owner.
Attractively finished in black over black—a colour scheme that very much fits the model’s menacing image—this 996-generation GT2 is smart and well presented, with the odometer reading just 33,744 kilometres at the time of cataloguing.
