The 996 GT2 made its international debut at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2001 and the first customer cars were delivered that summer.

It combines a number of the GT3’s hardcore performance-focused features, with the reinforced Turbo body shell and Porsche’s most powerful turbocharged engine to date.

With its stripped-down GT3-style interior, rear-wheel drive only and lack of any traction control or stability control, the GT2 is a formidable machine.

It came to market as the fastest and most expensive 911 – a modern-day Widowmaker!

For the 2004 model year, whose production started in September 2003, Porsche made a series of updates to the GT2.

By reprogramming the engine management system and installing the latest KKK K24 turbos, maximum power was increased from 462 hp to 483 hp at an unchanged 5700 rpm. The torque of these M96/70SL engines also received a useful boost, with 472 lb-ft available from 3500 rpm to 5700 rpm (up from 457 lb-ft from 3500 to 4500 rpm).
