Transmission No. 82545

The Porsche 356 C, introduced in 1964, is considered the most refined iteration of the 356 series, combining proven engineering and enhanced performance. This model featured several significant upgrades, including four-wheel disc brakes from ATE, a ZF steering box with improved precision, and a 12-volt electrical system for greater reliability. The 1,600-cc engine was further enhanced, producing 95 horsepower in the “SC” specification, making it one of the most powerful versions of the venerable pushrod flat-four. The C-Series also benefited from Porsche’s purchase of the Reutter coachbuilding firm, which handled the construction of the Coupé and Cabriolet bodies. These upgrades improved both safety and performance while maintaining the lightweight, rear-engine, rear-wheel-drive charm of the 356.

According to a digital copy of its Kardex this 356 SC Coupé was ordered for Tourist Delivery by Paul Madigan of La Mesa, California. Delivered new on 2 October 1964 via Max Moritz of Reutlingen, this 1964 Porsche 356 C 1600 SC Coupé was originally supplied to Madigan who was a charter member of the Porsche Club of America and later established its San Diego Region in 1957. Finished in its striking factory combination of Irish Green (6406) over a Green Kunstleder interior, the car was specified with a comprehensive array of options selected by the “dyed-in-the-wool” Porsche aficionado. These included chrome-plated wheels with hubcaps bearing the Porsche crest, twin Talbot mirrors, dual headrests, an antenna, dual loudspeakers, molding strips, a camber-compensating rear spring, a set of green Coco mats, and a travel kit, the latter surely coming in handy while in Europe!

The car was subsequently returned with Madigan to sunny Southern California in early 1965. Later in its life, it crossed the Atlantic once more to England, where it was acquired in 1999 by a Dutch owner who would care for it for more than twenty years, until recently. He imported the car from the United Kingdom and, in 2007, commissioned works by Auto Service Kraan in the Netherlands. Work included partial engine disassembly and reassembly encompassing the cylinders and pistons, a cylinder-head overhaul, conversion for unleaded fuel, crankcase cleaning, odometer conversion to kilometers, seat-belt replacement, and further refinements. The detailed invoice is available on file.

More recently, in 2022, Auto Service Kraan carried out an annual service when the odometer read 65,762 kilometers; the car has covered just 400 kilometers since. This highly sought-after SC, finished in an elegant and ever in-vogue shade of Irish Green, combines the potent 1600 SC engine, with its 95 horsepower among the most powerful in the range, with its original transmission, and also stands as the first model to be equipped with disc brakes, making it the most refined and accomplished evolution of the Porsche 356.
