2016 Porsche 911 R
Powerful, engaging, and classic, the limited-production 911 R combined the otherworldly 500-horsepower 4.0-liter naturally aspirated flat-six of the GT3 RS with the wingless body of the 911 and, crucially, a six-speed ‘GT Sport’ manual transmission developed specifically for the new model in place of the GT3 RS’s dual-clutch PDK. As standard, each 911 R featured Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes, a titanium exhaust system, a magnesium roof panel, a carbon fiber front lid and front fenders, making it the lightest 911 variant in the model range at debut, some 112 pounds lighter than the GT3 RS.
The new “911 R-specific” six-speed manual, with its closer ratios and shortened throws, created a connection between driver and car in a way no PDK-equipped Porsche could. Any magazine or YouTube channel that could get their hands on a press car raved about the sound, power, and pure driving experience that awaited those fortunate enough to sit behind the wheel. Its stripped-back simplicity combined with retro styling cues like its simplified interior and Red or Green exterior stripes linking it back to the 1967 911 R continues to make it one of the most desirable 911 variants of the past decade. It was so desirable, in fact, that it helped normalize the allocation and waitlist culture surrounding Porsche’s most coveted models and became the first jewel in the crown for 918 Spyder Circle members.
