The launch of the Porsche 918 Spyder has redefined the supercar and introduced a new category known as “hypercars.” The 918, along with the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, heralds the arrival of a new generation of cars, and this elite group—which includes the 918—offers technology never before seen in motor vehicles. The power of the internal combustion engine has been combined with hybrid technology to deliver a package that is quite simply mesmerizing.
The 918 Spyder features two electric motors that deliver a combined 286 hp—the highest power output of any production hybrid motor the world has ever seen. The hybrid battery, a liquid-cooled, high-performance lithium-ion unit, provides an instantaneous boost to the electric motors and can be recharged using a standard power outlet and charging cable, or while the vehicle is in motion. In one such scenario, a portion of the vehicle’s kinetic energy is converted into electrical energy by the electric motors. Additionally, one of the electric motors can be driven by the engine, acting as a generator and thus charging the hybrid battery. As a result, driving in purely electric mode is possible, or the greater reserves of energy can be used to enhance the car’s performance on the track. The standard charging time for the vehicle when connected to a 240-volt power supply is about two hours.
The combined power output is nearly 900 hp, with a 4.6-liter V8 engine delivering a truly fantastic sound. The car’s top speed is 214 mph, with a 0-60 time of just 2.5 seconds, and it can accelerate from 49 to 74 mph in a barely believable 1.2 seconds. As the only car in the aptly named “Holy Trinity” to feature a removable roof, the 918 offers an extra dimension, making the driving experience all the more extraordinary.
The all-electric range is up to 19 miles, and the car will, somewhat surprisingly, achieve an average of around 30 mpg. Extensively constructed from lightweight materials, the monocoque tub, subframe, doors, and body panels are made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic, while the bumpers are made of polyurethane. The suspension features forged aluminum wishbones, with PASM adaptive dampers fitted as standard. Another feature of the car is the four-wheel steering, which improves cornering, handling, and stability and helps make the car feel smaller. This system is controlled by the vehicle’s current speed, and the rear axle can be steered in the same direction as the front wheels or in the opposite direction.
