The Porsche 968 – The Ultimate Transaxle Evolution
Introduced for the 1992 model year, the Porsche 968 represented the final and most sophisticated evolution of Porsche’s legendary four-cylinder transaxle sports cars, a lineage that began with the 924 and continued through the 944.
Although originally developed as the successor to the 944 S2, the 968 was far more than a simple facelift. According to Porsche, over 80% of its components were either newly developed or substantially revised.
The 968 featured a completely redesigned front and rear appearance, a further developed chassis, a new six-speed manual gearbox and Porsche’s innovative VarioCam variable valve timing system.
Its naturally aspirated 3.0-litre four-cylinder produces 240 PS (176 kW) and 305 Nm of torque, making it one of the most advanced naturally aspirated four-cylinder sports car engines of its time.
Unlike the more track-focused 968 Club Sport, the standard Coupé retained its comfortable interior, additional sound insulation and greater everyday practicality.
Another particularly attractive feature is the electrically operated, fully removable roof panel. It can be tilted open for ventilation or completely removed, offering a genuine Targa-style open-air driving experience while retaining the elegant lines and practicality of a Coupé.
The 968 was also the final chapter of Porsche’s front-engined, four-cylinder transaxle era.
Today, it is appreciated for its outstanding balance, analogue driving experience and increasingly recognised collector appeal.
Maritime Blue – A Remarkable Combination
This particular example is finished in Maritime Blue (L38B), one of Porsche’s most distinctive colours of the early 1990s.
Combined with its original black Porsche Script interior, 17-inch Cup wheels and removable roof, the result is an exceptionally attractive and period-correct specification.
The car presents in beautifully preserved condition, reflecting its limited use and careful ownership.
According to the previous owner’s statements, the vehicle is accident-free and retains its original paintwork.
Paint thickness measurements are available.
Ownership History & Documentation
The car was delivered new by Porsche Zentrum Straubing in May 1992 to a German entrepreneur.
Initially registered through his company and subsequently in his own name, the Porsche remained with the same original driver until his passing in 2011.
It was then acquired by a family friend and Porsche collector, who preserved the car in his private collection alongside other Porsche and Mercedes-Benz models.
The vehicle remained professionally stored and maintained within this collection until 2024, without being registered by the collector.
In 2024, the Porsche returned to regular road use under its next registered private owner, who continued to maintain and carefully enjoy the car.
The documented mileage progression confirms its limited use over the years, with recorded mileages of 47,827 km in 2011, 49,190 km in 2020 and approximately 57,400 km today.
The car is accompanied by an impressive collection of original documentation and accessories, including:
- Original German Fahrzeugbrief
- Original service booklet and owner’s manuals
- Historical mileage and maintenance documentation
- Two sets of keys
- Original locking wheel bolts with matching keys
- Blaupunkt Kiel radio with documentation
- Additional set of Cup wheels with tyres
- Indoor car cover
Maintenance & Factory Equipment
In recent years, the Porsche has benefited from further mechanical attention, including gearbox work, new Continental tyres, a replacement battery and an extensive service in October 2025 at approximately 54,500 km.
The latter included various maintenance and mechanical works, with an invoice amounting to approximately €3,850.
Factory equipment includes:
- C00 – German market specification
- 220 – Limited-slip differential
- 231 – 17-inch tyre specification
- 403 – 17-inch Cup wheels
- 650 – Electrically operated, removable roof
- L38B – Maritime Blue
- AB – Black Porsche Script interior
